It is actually my buddy's project but were building it in my garage, it is a little rusty but its complete and does run. Anybody know what kind of front clip will work nice, I've heard of 73-87 parts on the 63 - 72's but i dont know if they will fit on the 61 frame, we were also thinking of a 70's z-28 clip heres some pics that poor 240 6 cyl wouldnt break 55 mph on the way home here is after a few hours with some penetrating oil, some hammers anda few stiches in my knuckle from that contraption welded to the front bumper
whats in the works for this truck? for some reason, when I saw that first pic with it on that trailer, one thing popped into my head. KUSTOM!!!
mild 60's custom, major al***ude adjustment so we quit getting nose bleeds everytime we sit in it, buick 350 power plant, some shaving and dechroming, power steering and brakes and some blue paint with major metal flake sitting on some 5 spoke keystone rims. we have almost all of the parts, its just a matter or putting it together now
My grandpa has a '61 he's just finishing up. I remember him telling me that the '60-'61 frames are supposedly narrower in the front than the others which gave him apparently a bunch of problems when he went to mock a small block up in it. ?? I'm not 100% sure about this since he can be a grumpy old fart some times but it maybe something to think about, nova clip might be a good way to go. Keep us up to date on the build.
Cool project. I love those early 60's Chevys. Sounds like you have a good plan for this one. Keep us posted.
check out the forums on Chevy Talk ,tons of 60-66 truck stuff, and the 71-87 front crossmember should go on no problems ,you just have to get rid of the t-bar stuff and drill some extra holes.I am moving to Alberta later this year and was curious whats a truck in that shape go for out there?I want one for a year round beater ,not to restore,60-66 chevy or ford 1/2 ton ? Koolkemp
if you end up not wanting to use that hood, i may be interested in the eyebrows or maybe the whole hood...let me know when/ if you make a decision... its always cool to see the old trucks in almost origonal condition... i second the chevytalk forums.... the 60-66 section has a lot of knowledgable people there, and many have swapped frames and subframes, and a few are in the process... keith
thanx for all the info, a buddy of mine has a 78 jimmy that we can have for a donor, so were gonna try to make the front end fit. As for the price, we looked at about 15 trucks from 1949 to 1966. we paid $800 for this one, it ran but has no clutch or brakes and needed four new fenders and rocker panels. anything that runs and has a decent body is $3500 and up. Anything thats been partially restored is over $5000
the 63-87 trucks all have similar frames, but the 60-62 is different up there, so you'll have your work cut out for you. you can crank down the torsion bars all the way for a quick (no suspension travel!) drop job.
i was thinking of clipping it with the jimmy front end not just swapping the parts over, but if the jimmy clip is now where close to fitting then we will just look for another donor, the jimmy is almost free so its worth a try
