On my 57 NYer project I took out the tank, rinsed it, filled it with water and welded a 3" high neck where the filler hole is on the tank. Then took out the filler pocket on the rear quarter and welded it
on the upper left quarter panel also welded a small ventpipe on the steel filler neck after drilling a small
hole on the upper side of that filler neck. I bought a new long rubber filler hose from some 90ies pickup truck, mounted that between the filler neck and tank and now, I put a small rubber hose from that little
ventpipe on the filler neck going down and out from one of the inspection holes or whatever on the inside "rocker" of the quarter panel. The filler is now in the trunk with a vented filler neck and an unvented filler cap. See enclosed pics from different stages.

Caveman without the rag. Fuel filler in the trunk. I am a big fan of it behind the tail light too though.
