It is a proud day for Kustoms. Gary Chop it won the big $$$ at Starbirds. I saw a on the HAMB that the bubble top was in Tulsa, so Duke and I drove through freezing rain to go check it out. WOW!!! the sled needs to be seen in person. Pictures do not do it justice. If you get the chance to talk to Gary, please take the opportunity. I love his at***ude towards Kustoms. He dosn't care if you like it or not, he built it his way. Kongrats Gary!!! I borrowed a pic, I'll try to post mine later this afternoon....... Happy Trails, Mick
I love that car. I mean, it's by no means the clean, flowing-lines type of car you picture in your mind's eye when somebody says "custom", but it's unique in construction, design, and style. Whether you like it visually or not is beside the point. It's a breath of fresh air, something the rod & custom world has needed for a long time.
I thought it had to be a ............... "Frist time showing" to compete or the BIG prize?............. ive seen that car all over
I think that's only for the Detroit Autorama/Riddler award...not Tulsa/Starbirds and not every show promotor plays the same... R-
I LOVE Customs but also prefer a *real* car that be can be driven. Try driving that bubble in the Texas Summer!
1st time showing at Tulsa/Starbirds show. That's the only rule on that. Alright car, but compared to what it went up against, no. There will be way less big money cars show up because of this. But it's Darryl Starbirds show and he is "bubble top king". I knew it would win if it showed up, so did everyone if they knew darryl. No biggie, don't need anyone to tell me whats kool and what ain't. One question, how does it turn? and what kind of wheels, frame, ******, etc. That everyone else that competed for that $$$ tryed so hard to clean and so off. Oh well, can't gett'em all. I just know that it was a slap in the face to people like my dad, the Chromezilla guys, JF from Canada, and really all the carbuilders that put alot a time and effort to build cars that can be show'n up side down and still drive away! Oh well. That's why i don't try and build a car like that for myself.
The Kaiser was my first pick. I thought the same thing about driving the bubble around. Still, I have to admire the amount of work, and LSD that went into the creation of the bubble top.
Hey Mike, I thought that your Dad had it won. My pick three was the '69 Camaro, the '51 kaiser and Chop its bubble top. The reason I picked the bubble top over the rest, it was the car that I would like to drive home. The past two years I was picking a Kustom: Dore's Caddy Roadster and Mercury Charlie's Merc. Both of them were my pick because I'm into Kustoms. If my memory is correct, the car sits on a '85 Lincoln Frame and the front end is wider than it looks. Gary told me you can turn around just like any other car. (just no blind spots) Gary also said that he dosn't build cars that are not able to drive. One of the kool feature is the bubble top has neons on the inside. This way at night the bubble top will be a purple glow. Can ya see out of it?? Who cares.... people will be driving into the ditches to get out of your way..... I hate that your dad didn't take home the gold, but it was kool to see it go to a kustom. Happy Trails, Mick
