From what I can see the grain structure looks a bit large ,if it is, then they should refund your money

I would call them. They might give you credit on something else. Summit always treated me good, Jeg's is another story. A lot of Jeg's brand stuff you can find on ebay for a whole lot less. That tells you something right there.

Busy week around here. Got the new parts in - of course I like to do it all myself - so didn't order a completed rear. This is the Strange HD Pro case. It uses a huge bearing on the pinion support.

    IMG_1967.JPG

The grain on the Summit case does look like shop floor sweepings are mixed in o_O

The bigger bearing needs a steel spacer -

.... and my shop press is on its last leg. Of course the new bearing got crossed up

So time to visit Johnny again :D

Back in biddness - Jack came over to help - he is getting good at this rear end stuff ;)

Little too tight - this is so time consuming - but better than watching TV .... IMG_1983.JPG

Ready to go in at last!

Will you be using micrometer blue on the teeth to help check correct alignment.

Hi Dave - do you mean the white paste we used to check the contact patch on the ring gear? Never heard of micrometer blue.

I suspect Dave is referring to "Blue Death" as we called it because of the potential for application mischief. Really it's a blue, oil based paste that adheres tp anything it touches. Great for fitting parts to a very close fit. Several companies market it. I've seen white lead used when available, synthetics compounds used sometimes as a subs***ute, since white lead is almost totally banned in US, and even lady's lipstick.
Dunno what you're using but I can see the pattern as a white smear on ring gear teeth in pics of Jack with the rear gear, doing setup of gear mesh.
Tony, I fully realize that right now you're busy as hell trying to get ready for Greer, when i9t's all over and when you return home with the season ended, there'sm something you need to do:
You ,need to take the pics you have shown with their unit side by side with the one from Strange, and the obvious superior design and build of the Strange, present them to Summit and ask for a refund, or at least a store credit equal to purchase price. With all their claims for this part, and the obvious failure and lack of strength in design and materials in theirs, a good push on them just might work.
I haven't bought anything from them with their brand name on it worth enough to get real upset over if I didn't get satisfaction from them, but I have gotten store credits on several items. Worth trying if you get bored one day.

Are you referring to 27 in lbs as too tight or was that your final number? Sounds pretty good to me, most rear ends with new bearings are 15-29. Usually like to set mine to 25 in lbs. That Strange stuff looks so much better. Sometimes the best money spent is to buy the best.. Are SEG coming back to Meltdown Drags again next year? If I can get a good rear end under my car I have a low 10 sec top end combo waiting to go in my engine. Went 9.60 in a little lighter car.

This is a funny thing I have found myself doing when showing Jack how to do stuff - if the paper says 20-25 inch pounds, do I tell him its fine at 27? When its just me doing it - its ok. The tool might even be off 2 inch pounds - but I don't want him seeing me do things quick and dirty - :D oh wait ....

Yeah man we plan to go to Meltdown until the fuel rods burn out! Best event of the summer! It will be cool to see the Poncho punch out some low ETs - its was pretty fast when I saw it.

Oil based paste for indicating high spots on machine bearings, machine tool beds etc. Easily removable with methylated spirit

    Permatex Prussian Blue.
I've just checked , it's the same stuff, it should be put on only a couple of thou thick on one side of the gear when the gear is rotated it will show any high spots on the mating gear.
Because it's only a very thin layer it will not cause problems but can be cleaned using methylated spirit .
    Tony
Because of the very high stresses your putting into the axle and differential you will need to build to very high accuracy and need to be sure each tooth on each gear is correctly aligned , overloading even one tooth will cause the diff and axle to fail.Every component will needs to be checked including the splined shafts. The permtex prussian blue is good in aiding you to do so.

Yeah its not cancelled yet - but we need to get together somewhere - no need to sit in a garage and play dress up and take selfies. o_O You guys can sleep here if you want. Nick will be in the Dead Cat room though

  25. I'll be in Geensboro NC by 3:15 friday, that puts me about 5hrs from your place. How far are you from Winder? I'm visiting Jon Kaase and crew there on Tuesday the 10th. Since the Border Bandits are driving 12+ hrs straight to Greer, & I'm flying thousands of miles to come take some turns out of your pressure plate with my chrome plated Allen wrench, maybe, we can **** it up and drive two more hours to your place Saturday, if Greer turns into Atlantis. I'm hoping the weather people got there heads shoved somewhere wrong on this one.

Winder - I know it well :) about 30 minutes from here. They have good boiled peanuts there.

  27. If my whole day doesn't get used up (which it shouldn't) maybe I can come by for a visit Tuesday.
