Had an Ingersoll at work that performed perfectly with regular oil and filter changes. No problems until one night when it's contactor sparked an explosion caused by leaking propane from a broken line. Found it in the middle of the parking lot in the morning. Use the synthetic oil they recommend and it will last probably longer than you. At home I'm still using a Westinghouse Air Brake Co. machine that has never needed service beyond oil changes.

I like the Quincy brand sold by Northern Tools and others. Old company and made in USA.

Ive had an Ingersoll "5hp" for 25 years and its never let me down. On the other hand i have pieced two more together with parts that cost very little and are just as reliable. One is a honda gas with a Chinese pump and the other is a true indusrial 5 horse two stage. Look for used parts. I found them to be fun simple projects.

If & when my 25yr old Sanborn 5/60 from Farm & Fleet (now Tractor Supply) pukes, I'll go two stage this time. Oil & filter changes is all I've ever done to it, can't complain. You probably already know this, but stay away from anything oil-less if you value your hearing. Those sumbeaches are ridiculously loud!

Take a look @ Porter-Cable, had a 60 gallon that was great and was under field service.

My Champion finally gave up this week as well. I am going to see how much it will be to rebuild it. I have my reserve IR 3hp plugged in and running, though.

What quit on your compressor? Just about the only thing that KILLS a 60/80 gal. is a rusted out tank. Compressors are available new or reman. and most have rebuild kits available. Electric motors are always available, On the other hand----If it's TIME for a new one, Quincy's on top of my list. BILL RINALDI

  11. I bought a 60 gallon Sanborn about 10 years ago, ran great until the electric motor shook itself loose from the mounting frame a couple years after I bought it. A quick trip to Grainger for a new motor and it's been working great ever since. Next time, It'll be an 80 gallon, two stage, Castair.

Yes. I worked at Ingersoll-Rand in the failure ****ysis area. We had a lot of exploded tanks come back. It was ALWAYS from the metal thinning due to corrosion and finally going!!

Quincy and they are quite because they turn slower. To get the capacity that the bargain brands offer they have to turn faster.

Champion is a sturdy, qulity, American made machine. What quit on it? I have a Champion R10 that has had the hell beaten out of it and it still runs great. The Champions are also rated at 100% duty cycle, unlike many lesser machines.
Quincy is obviously a quality compressor. If I was in the market for a new one, I'd probably buy a Saylor-Beall. You can find an end-game type compressor for around $2500 new. High quality, USA made stuff.

We have an Eaton 3 cylinder, 5 hp compressor and it has been worked to death and still runs great. The 5 hp motor isn't the usual small 5 hp, it comes with a ring on top to pick it up with a cherry picker......it is that heavy and big. They were great to work with and the prices were very good. Came in on a pallet and we simply picked it up at the truck depot.
