As 1946caddy said, swap meets. EBAY is ok but I really like to hold them in my hand. Do you want a single or a pair for YOM use, BIG difference in price. Place a "wanted" ad and read the "for sale" ads here and on fordbarn.com Charlie Stephens
There are a lot of matched pairs on e-bay with insane prices,,and noone is bidding. Stay diligent, your best bet is swap meets, flea markets and post a add here on the Hamb and the Ford Barn. HRP
Clear CA plates are bringing a bundle. I routinely see common black plates selling at $150+. Some deals to be had on EBay but need to be on it every day.
I have 3 or 4 sets of 29 plates. If interested. They are all clear. I cleared them through AAA let me know if interested. They aren't perfect but would work. Let me know if interested
www.oldplateguy.com, has some of the nicest plates for sale. You are going to pay top dollar but he has mint plates and really cool numbers available. He also has collectable license plate frames.
Dave Hindman--www.davesclp.com 707-448-8942 His plates are pricey but DMV clear and very nice. Have got 3-4 sets of 40 plates from him--excellent
matching pair of DMV clear Calif plates in really good condition are going to be pricey no matter where you buy them. have to just be in the right place at the right time - maybe even a garage/estate sale. If you buy a pair in fair condition it will cost plenty to have them restored.
Weechie@cox.net in Tucson, AZ. Price is dependent on condition, and he insures all his plates are clear. His phone is 520-904-3542. I got a real nice YOM plate for my '64 Chevelle. Looks like brand new.
I got a funny "watch thread" notification from someone looking for the Turlock swap meet. When I went to check it out it was gone. If anyone is looking for info on Turlock it is here: Autumn Turlock Swap Meet, Stanislaus Co. Fairgrounds info: http://www.springfallturlock.com/register.htm Remember there is more than one Turlock meet. One caters to old cars and another to later rods. I don't know which one this is. Picked up a set here in Cal today for about half the usual asking price. The guy bargained down $90 and paid the taxes himself, so they are on the way thanks Guys now got to find vintage plate frames
One of the plate dealers that sells at the Long Beach swap meet had them as repros. The important thing about that is that someone makes a repro. I will try to find him next time I go there but it might be a couple of months. If anyone finds him first please post. Charlie Stephens
I'll second the support for Weechie. I've bought several plates from him. He specializes inAZ plates of course. And he has custom frames for the older Az plates, also. I 'spect he'll be at the Glendale swap on Sunday as well as Good Guys and the Todd Harding swaps later this month
still the same website/email but please update contact for License Plates to Tim Hindman 360 635-7777 call/text Email: davesclp@aol.com Website: www.davesclp.com
Just a thought, did you run the plate numbers through the California DMV,If they are anything like here there are certain combinations of letters & numbers we can't register. HRP
You can check a California plate at this link. As it says, final approval pending but it worked for me. It's for personalized plates but you can put in anything, obviously a personal plate can't have the same numbers as a normal plate. I wouldn't use it as a guarantee that a plate is free but it will tell you if it's in use. https://www.dmv.ca.gov/wasapp/ipp2/initPers.do I got my pair of 1938 plates off Ebay in a roundabout way for $75, much less than they were going for. They didn't make reserve, one had some overspray, and I noticed the seller didn't live far from me. I contacted him, not a dealer just cleaning out his garage, went over and he took my offer. The overspray was latex from house work. Pays to be patient.
Got 130 plates this year on eBay, mostly from the teens to 1940's, finished out my shop. Many of the listings will allow you to make an offer, I found some great ones.
The license plate group is quite now days, since Zapato p***ed. Here's my oldest plate, sent to me by Zapato. Thanks Al.
With so few cars on the road back then and how many plates got tossed, its no wonder they have a good asking price today. JW
