History Drag cars in motion.......picture thread.

  1. That was Grandpa's Antiques. He was a buddy of Jocko's. Jocko hand carved those models, and others, from blocks of aluminum. Jocko would make up some cars, and have Grandpa sell them on commission. I wanted one real bad, but Jocko was really proud of them. I couldn't afford one.

San Fernando...the trees got planted to try and abate some of the noise, as the neighbors lived right next to the track...unfortunately it failed as the track closed in '71...it was a great place, laid back, paved pits, decent food, all but the shutdown area, which ran under Foothill Blvd...some did not make it.....Once when I ran here I got a thank-you letter from manager Harry Hibler...when does that happen now?

San Fernando again, push road right in front of stands...this might be the Zeuschel, Fuller, and Moody car with the new nose, before paint...

Mike Maranov, the "Mad Russian," from Milwaukee? lots of fancy bodywork for a competition car, trimmed finders, though the 'glass is cracking on one of them. Mike ran a '55 Chev before this Willys, which he towed to the left coast on several occasions...I remember it at Bakersfield, with him practicing starts in the pits...

Maurice Richter in the Richter and Armstrong fueler, around '55, at Colton. This car was really well built, painted bright orange, as Nesbitt's Orange (a soft drink of the time) was the sponsor...this may have been the first dragster to get major sponsorship.

Garlits in England...a number of U.S. dragsters, including Garlits, traveled to GB to put on a display...story is that when Garlits traveled around England, he realized that the British built museums to house race cars, giving him the idea for the Don Garlits Museum of Drag Racing.

I think that this is Pat Akins dragster at Colton, sometimes Joe LaCosta drove..not entirely sure, though.

Just like Henry J's and Willys, El Caminos (Kenny Safford) & Rancheros (Keith Black) were made for drag racing.

Tim still does a great job although the price has gone up a little. :) I was standing alongside of him at the wall at the CHRR a couple of weeks ago. Jere Alhadeff was there too along with Jim McCraw, Dave Kommel, Richard Shute etc--the photographers were as old time as the cars.

296 ardun, rather than the fender being cracked I think that you will find that the trailing edge has been cut to make tilting the front (without dragging the fender over the door and hinge) a little easier. The front is more "red" than the rest of the body including that last part of the fender which seems to indicate that they were painted separately.

Mickey Thompson promoted a race at Fontana (California) on November 6-7, 1965. Sorokin beat Paul Sutherland on Sunday and won $2,500 cash.
