The other motor is 99% Buick - was available in a Tempest.

The Don Waite car still exists in exactly the same form--it was on display (unrestored) at the 50th Grand National Roadster Show in the Cow Palace.

Maybe it is another clone like his Gas Ronda Mustang. If you look at the period photos of the real car, in the later ones it has the additional bracing on the front of the main roll bar hoop as seen in my shot from Long's. Also, check the location of the magneto in the original photo compared with Gary's one of the Hajek car. There is also a recent photo of Snake stripping candy stripe paint off a body panel so I really don't know what is going on here. I will call Prudhomme (and/or Long) next week and try to get the straight scoop.
Incidentally one of the things that Don was looking for when I talked to him at Famoso was the fill neck on the right side of the motor. He told me that they had used a common water fill neck as an oil fill location. He was also looking for (and found) a shower head Enderle as that was what the car ran initially although both of these period shots show a regular 3 rib bugcatcher with the taller base for the 8 nozzle set up.

Thanks for the info. Your neck of the woods was, definitely a real 'hot spot' at that time.

That's a good point. Makes sense. A few basic and simple guidelines makes this a great thread. I'm coming here about 3-4 times a day. I learn things I never was too sure about.

    Amazing photos Gary Reynolds...thank you!

This one hits close to home. These two guys in the far lane (Roger Blood and Charlie Cavil) built this car in a back alley garage in Alexandria, Virginia and towed it all the way to Pomona, California for the Winternationals. The Blood-Cavil Special turned back all comers and brought the C/Altered Class Champion Trophy back to Virginia. Sadly, the car met an early end when it ran over a downed motorcycle at York US30 Dragway in Pennsylvania on a Saturday night. It was dark past the finish line and no one saw the bike go down. Car was totaled.

  17. Gene has mentioned restoring the M&O roadster is planned. The Don Waite roadster was on display for a long time at the NHRA museum a couple of years ago.

Me too Mike. Great car and great story. Two very young guys with full time jobs, build the car, take it all the way to California, win the event, and then get all the way back to Virginia without losing their jobs. Probably didn't get much sleep. Charlie Cavil worked as a body man...there is a lot of very well done metal work on this car that was required when they moved the body back.

Does the sign in upper left look like the bottom half of 'COUNTY'?
So maybe Orange County ?? Or Kern Co. which would be Bakersfield ?

Kind of looks like Pomona to me (the sign), but I don't know if they ever did 4-wide. The cars look like ones that would have run there (Dutchman, Landy, B & W ). Looks like they're awful close together though. Dean?
