COE 1938 ford COE dually

Discussion in 'Off Topic Hot Rods & Customs' started by atotalnincompoop, Nov 8, 2015.

  1. After almost a year of puttering in my garage i can finally say that it's done. Well almost, i still gotta bleed the brakes, change the oil after running in the engine and a few other odds and ends, but for the most part, that's it.
    Here are a few pics, enjoy...or not☺

Wow, that is pretty cool! Not really the direction I would have gone, but looks well executed and also looks like it might haul ***!
How about some details about what's underneath? Build pics?

  4. There are many different directions to go building a hot rod, although i am a fan of the way people usually build them, i didn't want a hauler style coe.
Its built on a 99 chevy 3/4 ton van ch***is, 350/700r mid mount.

I really like what you have done with it!
What size tires you running, 285/35/22 ? They look like mounted on 22's ... Did you have to widen your fenders?
I'm doing a similar wheel tire combo and I widened my front fenders 1.5"
Did you make the bed ?
Share some build photos for sure.... Thx

  6. The tires are 285 22's i had tge 22.5" alcoa wheeks machined down to 22.125" to allow the use of light truck tires. The fronts are 235 30 22.
The front fenders were widened 2" the rear fenders (off a 46 ford) were widened 19".
Yes i made the box, running boards, everything. All i had was a rusted, dented up cab to start with

  7. I like it. Well done.

  8. WOW! Thank you, that really means a lot to me coming from you. You coe has been an inspiration to me.

Very nice!! And very different... I'm sure a fan of different!

How do you get at the engine?

It only took 1 year to build this?!?!?

Do you have brake lights in the rear fenders? If not, any concerns about someone not judging correctly with the black fenders and the tail lights so far forward on the bed? Maybe a pair of those flush mount, LED, thin strip deals you see on motorcycle fenders.

  12. The chrome skulls on the sides of rear fenders have super bright LED lights for the eyes that will be the side marker lights.
The rear edge of the rear fenders are only a couple feet back from the tail lights, i think ill be ok.
I drive defensively when im driving anyways, lots of bad drivers out there.
I cant count how many times ive avoided being in an accident by watching what other people are doing and being able to move out if the way

I was thinking more along the lines of someone coming directly up behind you at a stop light.. I 'spose it depends ALOT on where you live and drive.

The truck looks freakin awesome... You need some of those s***** things for the rear duallies!! What would they need to be about 2 feet long to protrude as much as the front set? :D

  14. I have the spikes on the rear, you have really look to see them.
Believe it or not i'm a "less is more" kinda guy. I wouldn't want to build anything too gimicky. Like those theme bikes orange county choppers used to build. There are lots of subtle details on this truck, the more you look the more you see

I would enjoy the opportunity to find the subtle details... I bounced around the idea of a COE gathering at one point.. It would be pretty cool to see how many we could get in 1 place..

  16. I was going to take it to the good guys event in bowling green this past september but didnt have it ready. So we took something else. I dont know if i would want to sit in it for 3 days driving. If it was somewhere far i would have to trailer it☺

Hmmmm... Kentucky is kinda in the middle of the country... maybe that would be a good location and venue for a COE gathering. There is also the Hot Rod Reunion in June in Bowling Green. Not sure if I'll be ready this year, I still have a long way to go.

Do you have a source for the wheel adapters?

  22. Try Tennessee wheel or 323 dually

  23. I got them from wheeladapters.com
Still up in the air if they are good to deal with but the units are nice.
Not cheap but worth it in the end

How'd you get that look? What type of paint did you use? How long did the process take? Did you have any help? Stuff like that. Thanks.

  27. Well, i was actually a fairly quick process. I just thought it all out first.
Before i even painted it black, i put some grey primer in a few select spots that i thought a real truck would of seen more wear. Like on the doors where my arm would wear the paint thru while my arm was out the window, that kind if thing.
Then the whole truck was painted satin black using a single stage paint (limco 1). The truck looked good at that point and i almost left it like that but i knew it could look better. So i found a brown colour that i liked and had some paint mixed. I didnt want to use a red like most people use, i wanted to use brown to look more authentic. I then painted areas with the brown paying close attention to how the sun would of faded it.
I gave it a couple days to dry completely and then i started sanding.
At first i was being all gentle using 1000 grit, by the end i was using 320 and it was looking better than the fine grit. All the scratches make it look more real.
After tgat was done, i got out my polisher and some compound and shined it up.
Thats about it, i think it turned out well☺

Thanks. I like the look. Did you just air brush the brown on in patches? Can we see the engine compartment? And more interior shots. I can't get enough!!

  29. I had the paint mixed and put in rattle cans.
I am going to have to get an airbrush one day.
Maybe next time i am at harbour freight.

Customized to the level you've taken it and with the billet wheels and all I personally think the "patina" paintjob doesn't suit it at all. Just my 2 cents. I also think there are a lot of failures when it comes to that kind of paint job - too many scuffs put in the wrong places to look anywhere near natural.
