we just got our plaques from O'Briens and i wanted to ask those who have painted theirs about how they did it. did you use krylon paint in the can? what grit of sandpaper should i use to get down to the shiny part? thanks for all your tips.

  3. Nice lookin' plaque;)

Gee for three bucks I would have paintd it with Centari and belt sanded it on my 4 x 164 stroke sander with 100 grit:D

Krylon will work fine on that bead blasted finish. Want it to look real nice? Sand it with your DA at 100 then 220 then 320 then 400 and then buff it out to a nice polished finish. Then paint it with the Krylon (after getting all the polishing junk off with some lacquer thinner) and wipe the paint off the polished raised surfaces with a fuzz free rag wrapped around your finger. It will take two or three coats and wipings. Let the last coat set up and then dip your ragged finger in some reducer or thinner to get the polished surfaces fully depainted. Easy on the amount of thinner on the rag or you'll get it into the background you'll be painting it again (the voice of experience.)

    Thanks for the order,

    Dennis

I powder coated mine with my Harbor Freight home powder coating kit, then went over the raised edges and lettering with the DA. Finished with 300 grit, but didn't polish.

Just paint them with whatever paint you like and then clean em up with sand paper -- you can do it by hand or with a DA -- I use my die grinder with 3m roloc rubber dics that wont take any metal with them.
Nice lookin plaque by the way.

Can someone tell how to make these plates, are they pressed or "cut-outs"?

We send our plaques to be tumbled in walnut media to polish 'em. Then we paint them and wipe the paint off the shiny part.

What that guy said about Dennis at O'Brien is the truth.

Just take some paint left in the spraygun cup and pour it into the plaque and let it self level. Worked great for my buddy, and the plaque matched his car. Easier than the sand, polish, spraybomb ,and scratch off the almost dry paint with my fingernail approach I used. Took about a month to grow the side of that fingernail back.

I use a 3 m red wheel on my grinder it leaves a nice finish. Then I paint and wipe with a rag and thinner . Final details are done with testors and a small brush. Ill try and post pics.

cant remember exactly what the dollar amount was per plaque but it was very reasonable, workmanship is excellant and delivered in a timely fashion.

shameless plug: shop at O'Brien Truckers :)

I used one shot on the raised area and flaked the lower areas. I'll try to post a pick. You can use any paint and a little sand paper on the raised area or a small lettering brush and some one shot on the raised area.
