Most likely a 'very rare' 350 (LOL). Only able to nail down a few probables from searching a few sites. My bad eyesight tells me the following from the p*** side id pad on block - 14W203830 then VO(Maybe?)2O(Maybe)80MA . So far I think it's a Chevy, 1974 -the 14 before the W - the 0208 (Maybes) built on Feb 8th. Can anybody give me any more info? Thanks in advance.
Get the big casting numbers from the driver side behind the head. They will probably start with 395 or perhaps 393 if it is a circa '74 350 block. So it would be 395****
I actually have a rare 350 so it is not like they don't exist. Well it would be rare if I didn't build it from pieces, the block is rare anyway.
According to my Chevy numbers book, the MA suffix could be 1958-1962 283 heavy duty manual trans truck 160 hp, 1963-1964 283 powerglide truck 175 hp or a 1967-1968 327 manual trans Camaro 210 hp. It says the same thing on this site http://www.1968ss.com/sbcsuffix.asp
Well then that would make my casting numbers way off base, here is a link to look at. I was going by the '74 reference. http://outintheshop.com/faq/casting/castings2.html I always go by casting number first then worry about actual application if I am not planning on building the motor.
V0208CMA might be what it has stamped, then it would be a 1974 full size car with a 2bbl 350. It would all make sense...if you are misreading that C as a 0
Guys, casting number is the ever popular 3970010 which could be a 302 (in which case someone should wake me up from this dream), a 327 or a 350. It is a 2bbl and the V02080MA is a bit strange. I'm sure the character after the 8 is a zero but what the 0's are following the V and the 2 are NOT anything like a zero -they look more like square characters like a 'D' with the corners rounded off. thanks for the replies so far. Hope we can eventually nail 'er down.
I don't look up ID stuff myself...but a guy on hamb several years ago, bought a cheap t bucket and checked the deck code on it's motor... It was a rare 67 Z28. He then asked on those Camaro sites and found the original car was still surviving, and a deal was made to put them together. I am thinking it was a MA suffix listed in that hamb thread that thead is on here somewhere
a couple examples of the number Zero, and one of the letter C. But they used different stamps at different times and plants. The second picture, the guy who posted it did not believe that those things that look like the letter I are actually the number 1. The way they stamped these numbers, you have to understand the number/letter sequences, and the fact that the numbers and letters don't look like you might expect, and also that they are not always stamped perfectly. If you want to post a picture of your stamping, we can see what it looks like...maybe you're right, and you have the only old Chevy engine with a 5 digit date code and two letter suffix from the 1970s, while every other engine has a 4 digit date code and 3 letter suffix.
The code that starts 14W...is actually a partial vin....and the code means 1 for Chevrolet...4 for 1974...and W ***embly plant...is Willow Run..which built Novas...the rest is the sequential number
CMA 1974 350 145hp TH350 F, X The F is F body...Camaro...the X is Nova....same engine code for both cars.
