This car had a rectangular tube chassis.

  11. That's what I meant, as opposed to round tube chassis like the Comets.
It had two long chassis members, I think 2x3 or 2x4 steel of rectangular tube. NOT a space frame. I can scan pics if it's some issue, my POINT is not all cars had a Logghe type
    chassis.

  12. Pages 1092-1093 of this thread have the same basic discussion of chassis.
Look at Dick Jesse's 67 GTO, you could say it's "tubing", but not what I mean when I say "tube chassis".

Side view reveals front and rear axle relocation, typical of funny cars. Rearend was moved forward 17-inches and new opening cut, while front fender awaits work for 7-inch forward axle placement. Due to the short deadline for construction of the car, Lutz and Lundberg decided to lighten the original frame rather than build a new tube chassis. Clean Olds frame is hefty by today's weight standards.

Immaculate trimmed stock Olds frame mounts early Olds rearend via elliptical leaf springs and a set of Gabriel adjusted shock absorbers. Heavy duty Olds metallic brakes are used for stopping. Right: Looking up front a four inch dropped tube axle mounting '48 Ford spindles is suspended by more full leaf springs and dampened by a set of 90-10 uplock shocks to aid in the weight transfer.
This was late 1966, the car ran through 1967 against guys like Nicholson, Chrisman,Doug Thorley and other 7 second cars. It ran a 9.22 at 154 mph.

  14. Here's another example of what I'm calling "channel" frames. Again, I mean non round tube Logghe type space frames. Frames with one main chassis rail.

    Contrast the two designs.

  15. I'd say you're using the wrong term, Gary. Channel - or more accurately C-channel - is open on one side. Tube frames are completely encased - as in square tube or round tube. This is partially boxed channel (see bottom right corner):

  16. Granted, my terminology is not correct then. I think I clarified what I meant, I used the term channel for lack of a better term, even though square or rectangular tube is correct, I'm trying to make a point of design, not materials.
I am not a builder or racer, never claimed to be. I just love racing and post mostly from memory, off the top of my head.
You are correct, channel isn't really the right term.
