And that particular trans has the Chevrolet bolt pattern. There were three different bellhousing patterns on the 2004R's. One is BOP, one is Chevrolet, and one is dual-pattern, meaning it has both the Chevrolet and BOP patterns.

The transmission pictured is the dual pattern case. I have heard there are 2004-R trans with single patterns, but I have yet to see one. I have several and all are dual pattern. I once had a TH-200 and it was single pattern. Perhaps the TH200 is where the notion of single pattern 2004's comes from.

The 404x on the casting indicates a 2004R case, and there are "rumored" to be three bolt pattern for the 2004R. I just ***umed the one shown was one of the rare "chevy only" which may or may not exist. The rumors of the BOP only patterned 2004R seem to be more widespread, so there may be such an animal. The one posted appears to be a dual pattern with some surgery having been done because it does have a couple extra bolt holes on the sides but the top has been sclupted to look like a Chevy pattern, with the top two dual pattern holes cut away.. Below are the Chevy, Dual, and BOP Patterns:

I am now at my shop, comparing dual pattern cases, and I find minor differences in them at the top. Apparently there are two or three upper case variants, all the same bolt patterns, but the case profile differs slightly and the mating face has 'voids' in the casting between the upper bolt bosses on some and no voids on others. Inconsequential in useage.

looks pretty straightforward surgery, merely t******* off the upper BOP ears.

I agree............neglected to include that in my prior post. Judging by the scuffing around certain bolt hole ears it appears the subject trans was previously used on a Chevrolet block.....which rendered the 'extra ears'
unnecessary....at least for that particular installation.
