I've got this pair of 265/283 valve covers. They are pretty heavy castings. I can't for the life of me figure out who made them.

  2. Well they sure look like Cal Customs don't they.

The abbreviation for Chevrolet is odd for sure. I am going to guess that they are pretty old whomever cast them.

  5. Based on the over all shape and the stamping inside, I'm going to guess Holmes as well.

They look like early Moon covers to me. But if so I would think they should say it on them? Nice pair!

  7. Diecrest in Australia made a set which look a lot like them. We abbreviate Chevy to "Chev".

They don't look to be Cal Custom as Cal Custom 7 fin have the outer fins interupted for the bolts. Their uninterupted finned type are 6 fin. Don't look to be early pre logo M/T's either (9 fin?). Pretty sure Moon are 5 or 6 fin.
Maybe early Nicson or aftermarket warehouse such as Almquist, Honest Charley, etc?

  10. Agreed. And my Holmes are pretty heavy and the fins look very similar. A thick casting.

As far as date...almost definitely 1957, because '58 and half of '59 had the same bolt pattern. Maybe that will help? Who was making VCs in 1957?

They don't have to have been made in 1957 ^^^ as most aftermarket parts are made after production parts.. They still make some styles of aftermarket covers for early style Chevys...

He's saying 1957, because the info stamped in the cover says CHEV, V8 1955 - 57. If they were made in 58 or later the stamping would say 1955 - 58, since the bolt pattern was the same.

But if they were cast in 57 why would they specify a year?.. there was only one v8 chev in the fifty's and in 57 you wouldnt know they were gonna change the bolt pattern in later years... right?

I've seen some old 216/235 intakes that also has "Chev" casted on.
