I remember you now, 'Doctor terry '. You are the young guy who, some months ago, asked about an Econoline panel job with grafted in dual headlights. Glad to hear from you again, although it could have been under better circumstances. Ray
Was in the same spot with a tranny and one or two other things a little over thirty years ago. No more burn-outs in the old mans car young man!
Been there....done that. Honesty is still the best policy. When your dad is old and you are older he will have respect for you for not thinking he is dumb enough to be lied to.
LOL I was racing the Missus 396 C-10 when we were in high school. manages to separate two pistons @ the ring lands (shut it down immediately and had a friend tow us home). he was the Northwest regional rep for Echlin at the time and spent a lot of time on the road. We parked it in the garage, and he called me about 5:30 or 6:00 Saturday morning and asked if I was coming to breakfast. I said sure and figured I was in trouble. When I got there he for me to go to the garage with him. he fired the truck up and said, "listen to this" and then asked what I thought it was, I said that it sounded like a broke piston? He agreed, after breakfast we went to the garage and tore into it. Yep the 5 and 7 pistons had both separated. We spent the day replacing the pistons and getting it back on the road, that evening when we were done I headed out to the merc to go home and figured I had dodged a bullet. he reminded me that I had a date with the girl and said I should shower that he had cloths that would fit me OK. So after the shower we were headed to the merc and he suggested that we take the truck. I said "OK? Uh OK" so I backed it gingerly out of the garage, he stopped me and then I knew something bad was going to happen, he leaned in the window with a felt tip pen and marked the tach and said, "When it gets to here, shift." That was all that was ever said. As for the original question sounds to me like the torque converter may have separated from the flex plate and it is only grabbing enough to barley drive it that it what I would check first.
I'm with everyone else - tell the old man . He won't beat you as hard if you tell the truth ... well maybe he will , but you'll fell better inside . Not outside , but inside , lol !! Seriously , I hope ya told him already . Now you guys can fix the car together . See - it's all about bonding .
You might want to hand him a Snickers bar before you tell him... Been there, but a long time ago. Honesty is the best policy. Because of a youthful, i.e. dumbass, incident, I spent a whole summer (my first with a license) grounded, without a ride and a lot of time to spend finding parts to put the truck back together. Excellent learning opportunity.
Sounds like we have all been there done that in our days. (I have) Hope you fessed up and told the old man.
Yes, and when your own boy blows that second engine you'll be easier to deal with....just saying it happens. If he has a 62 he probably has a similar story to each of ours. Regardless of how turns out it will be a good life lesson for you.
Sounds like you've got a golden opportunity to prove your maturity. As recommended previously, fess' up and explain to "Dear Ole' Dad"exactly what happened. Maybe he can give you a few pointers about doing burn outs without tearing things up. He probably knows!!!
Not sure about Chevy but a great Mopar Trans guy told me always do burn outs in second gear....... Fess up and you guys will have a laugh about it in 10 or 15 years
Last time I did a burnout in my 59 ElCamino(had a 427 at the time) she moved about 10 feet, grabbed traction hard and Quit moving forward. I put it in reverse, backed up about 10 feet and then lost reverse. Subsequent inspection revealed shattered spider gears. Not the first time I've done it either.
According to your profile, you have a 283 with a 700R4 in the car. I'm going to guess you took out the rear end, as others have said. Find a replacement pumpkin, and do the repairs yourself. When Dad asks what you're doing, tell him..................and why. You wanna play, you gotta pay. I do have a 3.70 geared, open rear end third member for cheap! I am Butch/56sedandelivery.
Took my Mom's 3 year old '56 'Bird to the drags one Sunday. 312, 3 speed H.D. Borg Warner box. "88 MPH, hell, I can do better than that..." Loaded the driveline, sidestepped the clutch...BOOM! Drove it home in high gear... Mom was no stranger to high performance, so I was hosed from the get go. She was madder than I'd ever seen her. So mad, in fact, she traded the 'Bird in on a '56 Ford Sunliner (convertible) 2 days later... The Ford was a 292 stick/O.D. It'd be a month before I'd be allowed to drive that one... Shit. Mad as she was...I'm lucky to be here to tell the story.
Hey, you've never felt more alone than when you fucked up something of your old mans. I know I would've loved to have something like the HAMB to have had someone to tell me to suck it up and confess. We all knew EVERYTHING when we were young. I look back now and think I had to have been the stupidest fucker there was.
And that's exactly why I posted what I did. We ALL have had some crazy shit happen to the old man's car, when we were kids. It happens and we learn from it. But as an ADULT, to be going to the internet to ask what you can do to save your ass? Sorry, but in 2016, that's a bucket full of teenage drama served by an adult. I don't want any.
He may have killed him. Hadn't heard from him in 16 hr. Im still wondering if it was the rear or trans. I bet rear though!
