Getting ready to put some wide whites on my 47 Ford Sedan. After I install what is the best product to keep them clean? Also who has the best deals on the wide whites?
You doing radials or bias plies? There are no good deals on wide whites...it's a gotcha...if you want them you gotta pay, for either. I use, and recommend, Diamond back for wide white radials...as for cleaning those, some good old soap and water will do just fine... R-
buy the widest whites you can find at sears or some raised white letter tires, and then have them cut! there is a guy here in town that has a machine set up and will cut them for $10 a tire. Or as discussed last week, you can cut them yourself with a DA sander
I know they're not a 3" gangster white, but, I just put a set of Broadway cl***ics (Made by Kelly springfield) on my Murc. They have a 1.5" white. I'm waiting to get a blowout from my dealer to cut on and see what's underneath.
Buddy of mine just made up a set of Red Lines out of some 17's he puttin on Mustang he has. He used a dremmel somehow, I seen the tires (cut down to the white) and they turned out well. After seeing his tires I see no reason why the same type of deal could not be done on a 2" or 3" wide white. All he used were tires that had raised white letters...guess there is white under the first ply of black? Gonna try it myself, need some 3" for my Merc too. Afterall...tires are about the only thing a guy can get for free, screw up practicing and it aint a big deal.
dont use wesleys bleach white that junk is junk..will turn youir whites yellow....i use castrol super clean..works better than anyother cleaner tah i have used..when i first got the tires i didnt knw what to use..cause with fender skirts the road dirt was getting all over the back tires making them dingy..a tire shop told me to use brake cleaner and it worked good but it takes off the white a lil at a time..i recommend castrol super clean ..get it at walmart or any parts store
To keep your www clean I use household wax (futura/future/ any floor wax for your vinyl floor) Reapply every 2 months.
OK, I use Westly's Bleach White, my Diamondback tires are like new....two years old and over 6000 miles. They are as white now as the day I put them on. One side note about that stuff.....put it on, scrub the tire and rinse it off right away......you leave it sit on there and you'll be sorry.
I put diamondbacks on my '47 and love them. As for what to use, buy the tires first and see what they recommend.
Diamondback recommends sandpaper! I generally use SOS pads. I useta use Westley's, and it kept the whites very bright, but prolonged use causes crazing of the whitewall surface.
Some hot soapy water and a scrub pad (like an SOS) should be all you need; didnt someone on here post a vintage advert for SOS that showed a guy scrubbin whitewalls with it?
marv, There are two guys in the area that do them. The first one is named "frosty" and his telephone number is 405-503-8597. The other is David jones. His number is 405-204-2022. Both of them are in the OKC area, but often make a trip to the tulsa are to do tires. I'd give them a call and see when the next time they will be in the area. I know there is a swap meet about 15 miles out of tulsa coming up here in april, and I bet they might be out there. Let me know when you are coming down, I'm always down for going and having a beer.
Marv, nobody read your question. You want something to keep them white not to clean them right? I say why? They arn't going to look good untill you have several years of grime on em.
Westleys has worked well for me. but be careful if you stack your tires on top of each other for storage ,some times the oils in tires will stain the whites causing a yellow stain.
