Our glorious Fall season is quickly running out of time in our beautiful Amish countryside so I’ve been driving my little 32 Ford Roadster just non-stop in the early mornings and late afternoons after work. I enjoy driving it at 40-45 mph on our very curvy Appalachian foothill roads. You never know when you crest a hill if there will be a slow moving buggy, a loose cow or goat! Normally I try to hit the curves hard without breaking making me really steer those old bias ply Firestone tires! The old Ford flathead smoothly purrs along at 45 mph and the two Smitty mufflers add a pleasant tone but yet not too loud. These relaxing and fun evening cruises with just no particular place to go help me to really relax in this crazy mixed up world.

Here are a couple photos I took last evening I thought you might enjoy!

Me too. It's easy to slip back into an earlier time in hot rodding when the seasons give us even more reason to enjoy our cars in this traditional sort of way. I see that you have fallen victim to my favorite Chuck Berry earworm song as well...

  3. Cool pics! My wife and I were in Ohio's Amish Country (Berlin, Walnut Creek, Sugarcreek, etc.) last week. Beautiful part of the country this time of year. Even better in a cool roadster like you have!

Once it stops raining here we'll be out cruising country roads enjoying the Fall foliage as well.

That rain is here now but after work this evening I just had to go for one more cruise before tomorrow's high winds and heavy rain take the beautiful leaves away. It was sprinkling lightly as I warmed up the Flathead and soon headed out. I stopped at my favorite sandwich shop and peaked in the door and Kathie looked at me and said half of steak and I said yep ...and if I'm not back in about a half hour ( in case I break down ) just give it away.
I was soon back stopping to wipe the windshield along the way but the little roadster with the sweet old Flathead never let me down all year!

    .

Did you ever get the urge to put down some rubber on the
wooden floor boards of those old bridges?

The can be slippery and fun!

No I never get the urge to put down some rubber on the wooden bridges. Most have warped old planks that actually make me drive real nice and easy and are narrow one lane through.

I did put down the pedal the other evening which was kind of exciting. I had just p***ed slowly through Ragersville and waved to Chico (the self appointed mayor) and the boys hangin out at the ole filling station. Once I cleared town I let it go as its about the only really good straight stretch of road in that area. The Flathead was really purring nicely and the roadster was tracking very well for the high speed but soon up ahead I noticed two chickens crossing in font of an old barn. I figured just about time I would get there they would be in the other lane. I was really moving by then and the chickens were just out of the way when I arrived but wouldn't you know it a big old colorful rooster came out of nowhere and walked right it in the road in front of me! There was just no way I could ever stop the roadster that quick and did the next best thing, what any old race car driver would do, I just leaned forward putting my head low close to the steering wheel and got ready for the impact!! Split seconds p***ed and nothing......I thought what the heck then out of the corner of my eye I see a very large rooster going straight up in the air like a pointed missile with his wings tucked so tight on his body right by the p***enger door!! We were actually looking right into each others eyes for a split second and then I glace back in the mirror and see him spinning around flapping his big wings landing safely on the side of the road. It was truly a Norman Rockwell moment and I'd love to have one of our gifted HAMB artists do a painting for me... I'll never forget that old rooster and he will probably never forget this ole rooster !!!

Still running the roads in the roadster on December 6th! We have been blessed with very nice weather. This evening was cool at 48 degrees but the leather flight jacket and gloves keep me warm enough! Another sweet sunset cruise!!

Nice car and nice pics, scenery wise.
What's with the little sheds in the middle of the road ?

  18. They are covered bridges.

I've a wee story that involves one of our native birds, but alas, the outcome wasn't so great for the bird.
    Your story is much cooler.

"A covered bridge is a timber-truss bridge with a roof and siding which, in most covered bridges, create an almost complete enclosure. The purpose of the covering is to protect the wooden structural members from the weather."
My understanding is they were used in areas with lots of snow and in cold weather areas and it stops the ice from forming on the bridge road surface as the water could turn to ice because of different temperatures on the road surface.Stops cars sliding all over the raod and over the bridge too.
I am looking forward to traveling up around the New England area one day to see the covered bridges.

I was liking the profile shadow on the gr*** in the ditch. Didn't really see the dash reflexion till I edited the pic. This was Sunday. A nice curvy stretch to unwind on followed by a strait away to wind it out on...
