How many of you have radios in your car?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by fatty, Feb 19, 2006.

  1. Now, don't get me wrong. I love music. I have a collection of over 600 CD's. Everything for every mood. The '54 came with a radio delete, and it's going to stay there. I enjoy driving it too much, I don't want the distraction. Just something about looking at the world through a 50 year old piece of curved glass that makes me smile.

Music sets the tone of the drive, so I have a radio in mine. Nothing fancy...Sony AM/FM cassette mega-bass head unit under the dash, Pioneer 4 way 6x9s in the package tray. I hook my iPod up the head unit and carry my whole CD collection with me.

I LOVE the sound of my exhaust, and with the chopped down Cherry Bombs, the stereo is a little hard to hear at times. But just listening to a set of pipes is like listening to your favorite song on repeat. Drive for a couple hours and that shit gets monotonous.

I put a radio in my car just because I had all the parts lying around. I mounted it under the seat. The radio was out of my old ford truck, so it has big dials and push buttons easy to reach when your driving by feel. I put two speakers in the package shelf and one in the stock speaker hole in the dash.

  6. Got a good magazine store in your area?

Pick up one of the electronics magazines.
There are ads for schematics for a lot of projects and a reverb unit is a simple one.

That said, I'd like to have a radio in my 32.
Driving it produces all the music one needs, but sometimes sitting in the parking lot and waiting for Sweetie . . . a radio would be nice.
In fact, a plain ol AM radio like in an early 70's Pinto would work for me.

Fwiw - my MSD unit is on the firewall right under the cowl vent and a radio wouldn't be too far away.
I've been told that putting the radio in a metal box would stop interference from the MSD.
    Anyone have any experience there?

The only reason that I have a radio in any of my cars is because I have a Wife.

gotta love the music. Too old for 1000 watts, but not for 480W. MP3 is the only way to go cuz I get to pick the music! Besides you gotta have jams if youre just hanging out

  12. Yes, I got tunes, located in the glove box for ease of access....when you run down the road for 8 to 12 hours its cool to have your tunes with you (also, chicks dig tunes). I have an mp3 but aint figured out how to burn off of my CD's.

My sound system consists of 8 cylinders topped off with aluminum heads, 2 carbs, and wide open pipes! No more needed.

  15. I built an overhead console for my Hup. Its got a Pyle (cheap) AM/FM/CD/MP3 player with a USB port on it for flash drives. The XM radio is behind the sunvisor. Speakers are hidden in the kick panels, under the dash, beneath the headliner in the rear and of course there are 2 15" Black Widows behind the back seat. Amps and crossover are mounted in the trunk. When I want to I can drown out the sound of a jackhammer. I can also make it so the guy in the next car can't hear his gangster rap at 110db.

In the hearse, I left the factory stereo in place as I didn't want to hack the dashboard, (it's the first old car I have owned with the dash board in mint condition) so I mounted a Sony Head unit I bought off a crackhead in the glovebox, and put the two 1200 watt amps just behind the front seat in a storage compartment at the front of the rear deck... and 4 15" subs in the coffin the back, even made a quick-disconnect for the speaker wires so I can still swing the table out for viewing... the four speakers and Bucky the skeleton fit perfectly in the coffin.....I can just open the glove box door and use the remote to skip through the cd/adjust vloume etc....

In the 67 Pontiac, I bought a repro "correct" am/fm radio and figured out where the amp was on the inside and wired in a 1/4" stereo jack so I can plug in my mp3 player (like an ipod but not an apple) and use the factory dash speakers for the long roadtrips.... I did have to put in a capacitor on the radio so it would work, and the am/fm doesn't work now, but it looks stock and I can play my mp3's.... pm me if you want to know the specifics, I made a schematic for the radio, but it's at work right now...

Gotta have the rock and roll.....

Though I am building a T roadster with a Caddy mill and I don't think there will be much room left for a radio.... But with that exhaust, I suppose that will be music enough just to hear it run, as it's my first solo full build...

I had Bob's Radio and TV in CA convert my factory original am radio for my '50 plymouth to a four channel stereo AM/FM/CD-input unit.

    http://www.bobsradio.com/

It looks completely stock except for a small LED on the face. The LED changes color depending on which mode it is in, orange for FM, green for AM, alternating green/orange for CD.

The original controls and presets still work, but the rest of the guts are new and electronic. It has mounted on the side of the case up under the dash controls for bass, trebble, fade, and balance. Also on the side are input jacks for a CD changer. The old three way tone button on the front now toggles between AM/FM/CD. The sound quality isn't as good as an aftermarket deck, but that's not what I was after.

I was going to mount a cd changer under the seat or in the trunk, but bought an Ipod instead, that plugs into the same jacks and contains my entire CD collection instead of just a few CD's.

    Here's a few pics...

i used to believe all i needed was sound of my glasspacks, but now i say screw that! i need about a thousand watts of power!! when im driving 5 plus hours to a car show i need tunes or else ill start agreeing with the voices in my head, and that is bad!! there is nothing in the world more satisfying than blasting down the left lane looking thru a 6 inch tall windshield cranking your fav. tunes!! :D

  26. Well I see a bunch loves that exhaust. I know this is too new for most tastes but I can't get enough of listening to the sound of my 5.0 plumbed through Flowmaster Series 40 Mufflers. My pipes go all the way out the back but the earth still shakes when it comes to life.

It is hard to hear the stereo until a upgrade. My daily driver is currently running 2 12 inch Rockford T1 Competion subs. power provided by a 1200.1 D5 diamond audio amp. They can handle making the 5.0 fade to a dull roar.

I am fabbing up a box right now for the Model A. Its getting two 15 inch JL's and a older Rockford 800.1 comp amp. They cannot be beat for their massive power packed into a small space. Not to mention I can have it sticking out the box and it will look good. I also seen Sony is making a new Drag and Play head unit. Remove the face plate attatch it to your usb port on the pc and drag your tunes into the drive it brings up and bam mp3s on your face plate no extra crap needed. I am also puting the satelite radio in. I am having a hell of a time trying to get it to look right on the A. They did not take the Model A's lines into consideration when they made these antennas. I am working on taking a pair of blaupunkt 5x7 three ways and puting them inot old drive in speaker box's. I thhink that would look cool and still provide clean highs and mids.

The component I want to put in the most is proving to be the biggest pain. I want to mount a 9 inch lcd touch screen in it. I am putting together a small auto pc to keep tabs on the cars vitals. I guess its always the to each their own when it comes to these kind of things.

By the way that hearse sounds like a asskicker. Have you ever brought it to a decibel drag???

  27. Around here, you don't need a radio. You can easily listen to someone elses, whether you want to or not.

  28. Thats so true. Thats why you make one bigger then theirs.

Last October I drove my Mustang to a show and had to park in the nose bleed section due to being a modern machine. Well someohow they parked this bad ass T truck rat rod next to me. The dude that drove it said well this sucks we don't even get to listen to the shows tunes out here. Well they had mobile sound stations running on 88.5 FM. Thanks to the Mustang the outcasts got to rock out to the oldies too.

The guy with the Rod said well I guess you younger guys with those damn boom cars ain't all that bad. I am guilty though of harassment via loud music. Every summer I cruise down to where all the ricers hang. They be bumpin the ghettos tunes. Mine is not the loudest system but its far from the quiet type. I pull in park and bump classics like Vanilla Ice, Milli Vanilli, New Kids on the Block, In Sync and even ones I like and they don't like Bon Jovi, and Cash. They can't drown it out cause mines louder. Got to love those one hit wonders.
