I didn't mean to imply that straight-axle cars aren't safe to drive. I'm just not in the mood to drive a 3,500# car with a nose-bleed stance and straight axle up & down 12,000' mauntains every time I want to go somewhere.:D
I get plenty of "oh, ****" moments on the race track. If I lived somewhere where the terrain was less bumpy, I'd damn sure entertain the thought of a straight axle. But back when I was in high school (60's) there weren't many straight axle cars around here. Most people just took the car they had, and did what they could to give it "the look" they wanted. Back then, most hot street cars wrere infact nose-down, with the ***-end jacked up as high as possible to get the biggest tires/wheels possible under the car. That's why I like the radiused wheelwell look, so I can run bigger rubber without tubs or having the car so high. Straight axle or not, when you raise the center of gravity, the handling suffers. I guess I'm just getting old, but I like going around corners at high speed without all the drama.:D

before it was cool?so whats that..the fifties?haha..just kidding!i agree the g***er trend is getting big and ridiculous with alot of wheezy snoozer cars three feet off the ground cruisin the fairgrounds at back to the fifties..but build what you love and dont lose perspective of what it is supposed to resemble.mine is a 47 international kb2.MAS axle, galaxy column, super t-10 283 with fuelie heads,275@.050 duration cam,12.5:1 and an 8 hole hilborn injector and vertex mag.if it's a nose up car,it's gotta go fast!!but like all things "rat rod",it has been blownout of perspective by imbicile fools who try to go for a 4X4 look rather than a vintage racer.we all know about the foools who go for the 'vintage look' by building a piece of ****,and this is no different.mine is rough, but it is basic, and looks like it was found in a barn after 30 yrs storage. and yes,i will be at back to the fifties, proudly displaying my pride for my truck.CHEERS!!

  5. I hate to say it but I owned a few of these in my younger days and was thinking about putting together a mid sixties chevy van for my summer parts runner!

Ya gotta have trends to either follow or rebel against...that's life.

Either way g***ers are just plain cool. I mean they're what half of the Roth-ian monster art in the world is based on.

I love g***ers, but mine is not. It runs on methanol.

Mine is a drag car, should be 9 second capable, and is SAFE.
I love period correct stuff, but I wanted to be able p*** NHRA tech anywhere and bracket race. Lets face it, true nostalgia events are few and far between.

I built mine 10 years ago. There was a girl in Hot Rod magazine back in '70 that had one that I always admired. After owning a few 57's, I built this one and made it very simular to hers. It is the one car out of many I've had that I won't ever sell. The stroker motor is getting tired, I'm breaking lots of drivetrain parts at the track, it's been to shows every year from the midwest to the east coast, and the rockers are rusting 'cause that's what they all love to do. But as much as I've driven this thing, I really don't see many others out there. I can count on one hand the ones that run around here. I see a few at shows, but really, not like you see primered cars or the vans back in the 70's. Just here on the hamb. They may be gaining popularity some, but I doubt it will be big enough to be a fad, maybe I'm wrong. You guys that have g***ers see people looking under your cars all the time at shows and at the track. I see more people scratching their heads in confusion, young and old, than anything else. Lots ask how bad it rides or ***ume it does...it actually rides nice...even has power steering. It's cool to see how you guys are building yours, and see how others recreate an era that came and went, by those that were there and weren't. I think it is WRONG to set guidelines, rules, numbers. You can clearly see that some guys are putting cars together cars on budgets. They might be building their car for dual purpose 'cause it's their only rod. To each his own, as long as they are enjoying themselves.

    Mine is a poser....And I don't give a ****.

Its always going to be in a state of constant change....lighter....faster....stronger.

Recent changes: I lost the front and back bench seats. Installed light racing seats.

Just got a 9" rearend for it...narrowed, etc. Will be installing it when I can come up with the scratch to rebuild it.

Till it can flip over backwards from its own power, I'll proudly drive my "poser" g***er.
    I'd rather be a poser in a g***er than a serious racer in a Honda. :D

Also, if its a FAD...so be it. I'll be driving mine (God willing) as long as there is gasoline and I can get parts.

That Rambler is totally bad *** man :) what did you use for the front axle and how hard was it to make it into a straight axle hot rod? i ask as the Gremlin shares the same platform as the 64-69 Rambler American,Rogue,SC/Rambler

Thanks HotRod60F150, The front axle was a Speedway Item, but at the time they wanted something like an extra 100 bucks (above and beyond the "regular price") to get the narrower version - which if memory serves me was 46" eye to eye as opposed to the more common 48" eye to eye axle - so being in buget mode I bought the cheaper wider one and narrowed it 2". So I run the the early ford spindles and machined spacers to run the GM rotors. They sell all this stuff pretty cheap now, but 15 years ago I had way more time than money so I made them - nowadays ain't much changed!!! ANyways I put a new 2x3 frame in this years ago, but pretty much followed the outline of the origional so it ought to be pretty much the same for swapping one in a stock ch***is. I knew I eventually would get to the tilt front end which was one of several reasons I whacked the origional frame. The other big reason I whacked the origional frame was the motor was too big to clear the shock towers. So in my case I whacked the frame to gain more room for the motor not because the tube axle needed it. Nothing says you can't put a "straight axle" under a unibody car - as I mentioned before my buddy had one under his unibody Maverick - as I recall his biggest problem was having room for the rear spring perch - as I recall he notched his frame a fair amount - I'd avoid that if it were me.

    What motor are you running???

It's a '56 Plymouth Belvedere 2dr post. '78 Chrysler New Yorker front frame section. 440/TF727. No pics worth posting yet. I've been mostly collecting parts, etc. while completing a restoration on a car (not cool here) for someone else for the last year or so. Hope to get that one done in the next couple of weeks, then I'll get busy on the Plymouth. It HAS to make it to the H.A.M.B. drags, so it'll be a full-on thrash.:D
