Must have an addiction. Not even close to finishing my 55 truck and bought this. Complete 36 IH truck very nut and bolt looks there just in pieces and priced right dirt cheap. Looking to se if my others have done one get some ideas. Thinking stick look on out side custom drive line and screaming motor under. Possible thinking diesel hot rod. No rat rod too much of everything is there to wreck this thing. Anyone's input start my thinking proceeds of what to start gathering. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
There have been a lot of nice looking internationals built over the years, please keep the fenders and forget the diesel,,use a good old American V8. HRP
Fenders stay! not an option. Love the v8 just trying to have that one thing different for the rest stand out. I'm sure the IH brands will do that anyway. Also have all the original drive line and motor. Fo could be full restore. Modern drive would be nice though Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Cool, nice score! And it does not need a chop. (great, I'm never going to understand how to use the font/lettering options)
Love the lines has the roof slope already and nice height of gl***. It's going to have all stock outside look. New shine of course. Just need to look into keeping the stock frame and adding modern suspension to it and what others may have done that worked and failed. I have a bit before starting this I have to finish the Chevy I'm building. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
You can keep it all International, and use a non-turbo 6.9 or 7.3. Good, simple engines that the diesel crowd doesn't want anymore. Do away with the glow plug relay and install a ****on. Keep the hood closed while here, and no one will know.
Nice looking truck. It might just be me, but go Detroit Diesel 2cykle 4-53T, with a blower and a brownie on the back. Or no diesel at all! B-) Youtube has some clips of twin stick shifting in a AD or a Diamond. Thats so cool!! B-D Or a nailhead, or a Chevy 302 or... There is plenty of ways to be different, with out loosing cool. But dont go 6.2-6.5 Chevy. Thats even uncool in a Silverado! Just my two cent I'm a hot rodder by heart, be in my weird mind, I've have an intch for big trucks. And weird and odd is also my thing. What would be wrong with a 345 IH? Not a belly-****on engine, but if a guy wanted to, I'm sure he could find a way to wake a 345 up. Little Detroits weigh a 1000 lbs, adding a 5+4 is close to another 1000lbs, putting that combo in that truck would be an abortion!
He asked for a Diesel, what diesel do you know thats small and not plane stupid. Vw Rabbits 1.6 diesel? But the 345 is cool too. And should perform fine in a small car. It's not gonna scare you. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
***mins 4bt, Allison 200 series auto. You will not have much leg room time you work the sheetmetal around that combo. And the frame mods, or new frame, Big rear end, heavy front axle. But it would be a nice combo. B
Yep, 4bt with a allison would be a sweet combo, bit more fuel, bit more boost and you'd clean up most small blocks without a problem, and be a bit different If your not living on the edge your taking up to much space
Add an X member and box at least the front portion of the frame no matter what you put in it. Back in the 70's I put a 430 Buick in a one ton C15 IHC panel without doing either, ***uming that the big frame was strong enough. About 30,000 miles later I was driving with my hand resting on the base of the outside mirror and my fingers were against the joint where the door post and cowl were bolted together. As I pulled into a driveway, I felt the metal move like it was trying to pinch my finger. It didn't move far enough to pinch me of course, but it shouldn't have moved at all so I knew the frame was flexing. It took a while but I finally found a crack in the frame right above the hole for the original steering box, so I added the boxing and X member --- which is a hell of a lot easier to do before the body is on the frame! Don't change anything on the outside of your truck because there's nothing you can do to improve the looks. Even a 2" chop will look wrong and I love chops. You really scored big, the stainless around the crank hole isn't even all beat to hell like it usually is. Keep us posted.
Good find ,those trucks sure are handsome, love the visor being integral to the body and the grill is killer too. Keeping it stock on the outside is the way to go. subscribed.
Truck looks to be in pretty decent condition, great score. For ease of build a straight 6. They are a very light truck as it is.. The IHC V8 parts are available..If you need wow factor a 404 IHC...
Cool truck, the 345 was a great, had 2 of them new (Scouts), they also used the Torqueflite trans. lots of Chrysler parts used on the International Scouts.
Great condition, those are nice looking trucks. I know it is not so hot rod style, but I kind of like the diesel engine idea. I think the 4BT is the best choice, unless you go smaller, lot of easy trans options with that. The DD 4-53 is also a potential candidate. Anything bigger will just weigh too much and size for the engine compartment. I have an 88 Ford with the pre-Powerstroke 7.3 (called the IDI, along with the earlier 6.9 IDI), and NA they are a dog. It is a V8. The turbo setups work well with them, no intercooler, just turbo right on back of engine and blow direct into intake. Still not exactly high power, but much better than NA. However this is a large and heavy engine for a small truck.
I third and fouth the 345 idea. There are suggestions of nail heads and others you occasionally see in rods but when's the last time you saw an International 345 in one?!?!? The stock script valve covers look cool too. I worked with a guy that had a really nice one built but he went with a sbc. Nice truck but kinda belly ****on in the engine compartment. His original front fenders needed metal work so he went with '32 Ford ones instead. Again going away from the uniqueness of the IH design as they are noticeably different. They are nice looking trucks if you want to preserve some of that as you don't see them that often. I am not a diesel rod fan either. It's up to you as it's yours.
I always liked the styling of the Haybalers in the '30s. Like the grille and the integral visor. I would not chop it, but then I'm 6' 5" and 260 and need all the room I can get for my long-legged carc***.
A 232 amc 6 from a international scout, with the International transmission bellhousing pattern. Not many like that out there...Just jesting on that.
I would go to a 392, slightly taller than a 345 and way more power. I drive mine as a daily in my 1210 and usually loaded with no complaints on power. Your truck is prob close to 800lbs lighter Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Ile tell you Mfj, I amREALLY not a patina guy at all but the paint n that cab with the vintage lettering looks worth buffing out to me!
