In a previous post HRP stated that he contacted Dennis Carpenter about weather stripping for our wagons to no avail. I would like to issue the challenge that we collectively contact them and express our need for more replacement parts especially the side window channel and weatherstripping. Maybe if enough of us show interest they will change there mind.
I am of the opinion that most,if not every Ranch Wagon owner probably could use the replacement side window channel and weatherstripping. I had to do a lot of back yard engineering to accomplish a so so repair,It would have been nice to make a phone call and get the correct materials.HRP
Here's what I emailed: Good day. I am restoring a 1956 Ford two door Customline Wagon and are not able to locate the window track, channel or weather stripping that is required to install the sliding side windows and the fixed windows that are over the rear wheels. I am quite sure that most of the ranch wagon owners are having the same issue of not being able to locate replacement side window channels and weatherstripping. The question is this: Do you, can you, and will you be able to provide these parts? Dimensions can be furnished if necessary. Please, seriously consider fulfilling this need for many wagon owners with both two door and four door models. Thank you in advance for your attention. Best regards, Bill
Carpenter does have a bunch of old cars on his premises that he uses to fit and evaluate parts. Don't know if a wagon is one of them.
For my Edsel Roundup and Merc wagon restorations, I had no problem acquiring all of the items that I needed from both Restoration Specialitys ( 814-467-9842) and the beaded channel from Perfect Fit-McDonald (206-682-7161) It would be nice if someone were to supply "kits" that would work but part of the fun for me is the fabrication. Also acquired the rear deck material from the Nomad guys at Cars Inc, (248-853-8900)
Everything is available for my 56 except the side window goodies. I sent my email also but it's going to take more that 2 or 3 of us to contacting them. If anyone knows someone else spread the word. I'm positive if enough of us express the need for these parts it will happen.
I've ask Carpenters in E-mails and in person at least once a year for the past 12 years,I've heard everything from there wasn't enough demand to they will look into it. I have noticed over the past 15 years that the 52-54 Fords are finally getting some attention from the parts manufacturers and all the ranch wagons have came on strong and some of the parts are being made for some. I had to use some rubber for the 55-56 wagons and cut to make it work. HRP
Has there ever been a collective effort? I would think a group of enthusiasts would weigh heavy in persuading a vendor to develop a new product. Maybe I'm too optimistic about it but it's worth a shot.
You may want to try contacting Dale, the owner of Cl***ic Auto Parts in Oklahoma City. Alot of the window channels, anti-rattle kits, etc are made by Dale Manufacturing...the same guy. They are really big into the window stuff and at least at one time advertised "if we don't have it, it's because we couldn't find a good enough oem part to copy". And not to put a damper on things, but that may be the problem...who has a nos part they're willing to let them borrow for however long it takes?
My request was made on behalf of the '54 Ford Club of America with over 600 members, granted they don't all have ranch wagons but there are quiet a few and I pointed out that 52 through 54 ranch wagons share the same window slides. I would think all the Ranch Wagons regardless of year would be basically the same. HRP
I got a reply from Carpenter saying they do not have the channels, but to check out the following sites. I've not done so as yet but will. Here they are: http://www.restorationspecialties.com/ OR http://metrommp.com/ OR http://www.rubbertherightway.com/
That's basically the same response I have received several years ago. None of the Vendors have what we need. HRP
Go to restorationspecialties.com web site and order some sample of seals that look like they may work. I got everything I needed, so far no leaks or rattles.
