Not a PC whiz by any means, but can't you set up the posts on at least the "classifieds" section to go straight to a moderator, and only be posted if within the rules? I've been many places where they pre-view posts (keeping out spam and stuff) and you get a warning that your post is being "approved" and will be on the boards later. Just a thought - would save a lot of "deleted" posts (and whiney newbs) Oh wait... then Rocky, Rash, and Cob would get all the good stuff first
There will never be a shortage of "Whiney Newbs", the only question is what they will whine about. I'm sure it can be done, and I know for sure it would be more work behind the scenes to make it work. Too bad people can't follow a few simple rules.
Yes, It can be done. In the same way the HAMB-O-Dex is done. As Ian touched on, it would create alot more work for the moderators. There are far more ads that are done correctly than incorrectly. It's just the incorrect ones and time spent on them and then explaining the rules which are, "Oh so hard to understand." The majority of listers have figured out if they put all the crap you need to know in the first sentence, you don't get screwed with and you ad works. Why? BEcause if you place your mouse pointer over the title it will show you the first so many letters of the post. I don't even have to get into most posts because of this. As Ryan said, he is close to making the classifieds a paid forum and made where only the thread starter and Moderators can respond to an ad. Paid, I'd hate to see. The second part I'm all for.
yea....YEA What the ugly green faced moderator said above ! Cob Forum Moderator ***** Get some stuff to auction boys. Every nickle counts !
I'm about 2.456 inches away from only allowing only subscribers to post to the classified section. To subscribe, ya gotta give up your green to the tune of $15 a year... Once subscribed, unlimited posts... I don't care so much about the money, but think it would clean up the forum quite a bit.
All that it takes is guys reading the rules and honoring them. If they just do it and quit trying to figure out a way to sneak one here or sneak one there and try to bend whatever and claim they didn't know and it would make things go much smoother. Guys who sell and don't deliver or guys who buy and don't pay...will get the boot / don't come back and you won't be missed. Ryan created this forum for guys to enjoy the love of old hot rods and customs. A handful ALWAYS fudge it up for the rest. What ever you decide boss, I back 100% ! Cob Forum Moderator
After tonight's classifieds,I think Ryan has it right ,let me be the first to pay up Ryan, paypal? I think some way to enforce support is OK when we are making money ,time to share the wealth. maybe to nail steady posters (and PAYERS) ads at the top in an first come, first served order, not? might stop the endless seeming BTTP's (mine included ,but damn those pages move fast or i would'nt do it myself) Chevytalk.com did this for paying supporting members in a seperate board and it seems to be working, ML, oh ya CT wants $25 a year minimum for a silver membership which i do and would here gladly pay, lest anyone thinks i do this for a living, its completely not true , The cars i sold went to get better cars + the last bunch of parts I sold here as always bought the following- 4 new chromies 2 15's, 2 14"s bullet valve caps and chrome lugs pr H4 tribar headlights new horn set chrome air cleaners chrome pwr stnrg pulley ,alt bracket ,MC cover + misc engine chrome 2x4 intake (from the classifieds, which i have not gotten YET) 2 Edel carbs -used 2 4bbl carb spacers Edel 2x4 linkage all plus my own cash went right back into MY car- not to make a living or pay bills,I do not make enough at a living to pursue the hobby, so i keep moving up to better cars by turning the cars over and selling the left over parts.
FIFTEEN GREEN A YEAR IS CHEAP... I was just trying to help find a way to almost "pre-screen" ads for ya I guess. Some other places I'd advertised before had a small page of "fill in the boxes" before your actual thread... then the program knows where it goes into the thread list... but yeah, I know it's one headache to cure another. I'm willing to pay upwards of $16 if I have to
the hamb has grown so big that i think dues are going to be a must hell i think the whole thing sould be message board should be on a due basis to keep the fngs down i can't keep up any more ya post something and 12hours later its on page 8 theres alot of o/t shit out there or hell if ya want i can crack some skulls for ya
Thanks Crapshoot, but the 3 of us will keep an eye on it. It takes a balance of not micromanaging to the point where guys drift away and yet keep a swift delete ready when it calls for. Again in the classifieds if guys have no interest in buying what is advertised, I wish they would stop posting O/T stuff. Ryan and us 3 moderators would be very rich people if we got paid $ 5.00 for every "Wish it were closer - Wish I had the money" posts. THAT'S a major part that quickly gets posts booted to the 8th page. Guy's could just as easily PM the owner to tell them nice ride - wish I had money bla bla bla but for some reason they like to see their post. I guess it is all part of feeling like you belong to a club etc etc.... Post in the main H.A.M.B. page all day long to shoot the shit. Classifieds, well that could be cleaner if again guys post only what they are interested in buying and leave 'Wish it were closer-Wish I had the money" to the main H.A.M.B. page. Of course if a guy needs to know if a trade would be considered then posting it gives fellow H.A.M.B.'rs a idea of yes or no on a trade. It is still a blast everytime I turn the H.A.M.B. on, so on a personal note for me it's all in a good day. Cob Forum Moderator
I agree the waiting priod was a good idea, stops the rip offs or one hit wonders who post n dissapear , the ones who stay learn a bit and get known b4 posting something to spend our hard earned cash on.
I do agree that the few of us who do contribute decent size amounts toward running the HAMB seem to be few. Not to whine, but its simply not fair that the few should support the majority. If you are making money on selling something, you need to be helping out. Hell the E _ _ Y, you fill it in, charges to sell stuff and they make money off your sales. why is it so hard to dip in the pocket and help out? Could always charge a small amount for all members, selling or buying, this way you have a cash base to work off of.
CBcpe - this brings up a subject i have been wondering about- how about a donation email or info on a permant post, say in the site user CP area or site header , thought about this many times and rather than do a search, i just let it go ,might be some other lazy folks out there as well, not unwilling - just lazy, hell, for all i know that info IS posted somewhere , I know i have sent ryan money B4 , but hell, I have no idea where that info is now.
Mike, It's posted at the top of the classified page. I disagree on the two week thing. I used to spend way more time deleting peoples replies that said dude hadn't been here enough so that I could delete the drama and close the ad so the poster could see it. This was still easier than sending a PM to the new user and more times than not, the new user didn't know to check for PM's anyway. Alot of times, if they cared enough to read the rules, they would just wait two weeks and then make their first post in the classifieds anyway. Now there are two things that do bring these probloems to the new users attention easier than before. We now have a function that allows us to shoot a message directly to the user and Ryan brought the flashy envelope back. If a guy wants to try and rip someone off here, waiting two weeks is no big deal.
Let me first say that if this became a Paid members classified site, I would probably fork over the $15. However, I think the postings would drop by about 95%. I've seen it on other car sites in the past. Is that good or bad?? I love chatting about cars and looking at pics, but most of the time I'm looking for parts. Stuff that ya cant buy new. We would all be at the mercy of ebay
now hold on cause i'm a little drunk at this time but is the goal is to keep the posts down in the classifieds that are against the rules or the whole h.a.m.b the rules in the clasifieds are clearly writen but there is none on the main board whats that about ive seen a or two post about o/t shit before on the main not to make more work for ya but heres my 2 cents 1= dues $15 a year for the whole deal 2= make'em wait by locking there posting 3= have an enforcement team (mini moderators)making sure fngs or others keep in line kinda like mall police don't get me wrong but the hamb is the shit and i wana keep it that way as much as the next die hard just let me know if ya need something done.
my last word on the pay site thing , if they are not willing to put up a measly 15 clams to make money year round, We don't need em anyway (thats just MY opinion + we all know about those ), from what I have seen in the past even sporadic posters make more than enough to cover that pitance, some of those obsolete parts are bringing WAY over what was paid for them,on the other hand some rusty old treasures still bring not a lot, but enough over a year to more than cover the mere $15 but how about this , -Limits- 10 posts a year-5 items ea. post max-free , 11 posts up w unlimited items a year- commercial lic -$25 fee Might be too complicated + too much hassle ,I am just throwing it out there.
I would keep it simple. Each post would receive one of two actions by the forum moderators. After posting, each post would be either deleted (if rules not followed) or locked. The locking would prevent replies and force PMing from potential buyers. It would also prevent bttt posts, but because the posts aren't being replied to, they wouldn't be shoved to the back pages as fast. The problem with my idea is that the poster wouldn't be able to edit thier post or indicate SOLD without a new post.
I am Medicine Head so hang on as I'm sure this will be disjointed, more so than usual. It is actually real simple to disallow replies to an ad, the flip of a switch, so closing an ad would not be necessary. Pretty sure the poster will not be able to reply either but we can pull the limit off of the time allowed to edit an a post so the poster can go back and add anything they forgot the first time around. This won't cut down on the numbers of threads. If there are 110 new threads a day they still take up the same amount of space on the page. What it will cut down on is how often these things come back to the top. Pretty sure the BTTT thing will be over, even for the poster. This will make it easier for people viewing the ads because they won't have to wonder if they've seen the ad before or not. It will also cut out comments on things that have already sold and it will make it esier for us because we only have to check them once, no more drama coming in after the fact.
well my opinion usually isn't very popular, but here goes. sites i've seen that use paid acces to advertising, usually dry up and blow away, at least the classified part. sure, it's not much money to pay $15 for the priviledge, but some uf us are only ocassional sellers, i've only sold a handful of things, and to be frank, if i have to go through a $15 registration JUST to sell in the classifieds, i probably won't bother for the few things i have to unload. it's not that i'm cheap, i'm lazy. besides, when you start charging, people start to EXPECT things. when it's free you always have the caveat: it's free, what the hell do you expect? you start charging people, they are going to start expecting that there is some sort of vetting process for sellers, or expect that something is to be done about sellers like Reuben Fuke who keep scamming HAMBers. if it's "not about the money" you could just as well have potential sellers send Ryan their personal contact info before they're allowed to sell. $15 ain't nothin to a scammer like Reuben. i think something like ebay's feedback system would be more effective at letting buyers determine for themselves what kind of person they are dealing with. not sure if the board software can have a ratings system only for the classifieds. that's my "free" opinion...you get what you pay for!
I'm inclined to agree with ray's opinion. That $15 will change people's attitudes about the classifieds. The HAMB classifieds are BOOMING right now. Seriously, there are some excellent deals in there. PLease don't make it dry up and blow away...... My 2 TINGLER
$15 for a subscription - now is this for the site or just for classifieds? My take - $10 for the site access, you want to drive you have to pay for the keys. How will this help? - weeding process. 10 bucks is low enough, you're not strapping the people that are wanted so they'll stay, but filtering those out that are gonna be just taking advantage of charity and abusing it. It'll keep people more serious, and honestly it'll probably keep it as fun as it is. And charging site overall won't discourage people from selling in the classifieds, a psychology thing really. And when people register to join as a poster give them a 30-60 day "trial" period , where they don't have to pay, see how they like it (they can post and not have to lurk), and at the end pay-up. Automate the system so at the end of the period, it "locks" them till they choose, a la software license. Part of this is a lock out on classifieds till trial period is over. Also classifieds - lock them after they're posted but allow the seller a "BTTT" button that comes on after 24 hours and so forth. That way you're giving everybody an easier chance to see everything to offer, but cutting down the clutter. I have a bunch more ideas, but no time to type. And these are just ideas, not criticisms, because I love this place in any form.
I would give up a 18 pack once a year to keep it going and to help out even if I dont sell anything just like to read and reply every now n then Ken
I m a FNG and i know my place...i don t post alot but the hamb has helped me out more than i can count so if an annual membership happens i m more than willing to pay it.
Ryan: If this comes to being a Paid site, count me in Ryan. I don't do Paypal, or personal checks, Just a USPS Money Order which is as good as gold.. You got an address where I should send you one for $15? I think that $15 a year sounds fair....I probably spend more than $15 a month, on the average, at the bookstore. I've delivered enough of my excess collection to fellow hobbiests to pay for that already.... And I have delivered a lot of hard to find Model A parts to guys that sincerely need them. And I know that they're more than happy to get them... I like your Classifieds....As I don't do Ebay. (Too many times I sent my cash and the stuff never showed up.)... I believe in keeping the parts in the hands of fellow do it yourselfers....
I'm sure there will be some instructions, let's just wait. Meanwhile please don't post any stupid shit to main discussion, we don't want to pay for that too...
