I guess some of you may have followed ******Knuckles post called " Photoshop request, thanks to choprod ".For more details go to : http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=66060 As the ***le of the post tells,******Knuckles was requesting for some photoshop ideas for his '51 Plymouth,a car I didn't pay much attention to.What a tremendous mistake... I'd like to thank ******Knuckles for making this happen because he simply pointed me to these cars.I also would like to thank Broman for the very nice photoshop pic.I took his pic and restyled the Plymouth to what I think is the ultimate Plymouth Custom Car.I'm not really into sectioning cars but it simply works on this one. I'm so overwhelmed by the outcome of this once "ugly" little Plymouth Coupe that I wanted to share it with you all, don't ignore these cars any longer...they are serious Custom Car material ! Let the arguments fly...
Now its a chevy Might be easier to start with a chevy Does look very bad ***. what about one thats not hardtopped? with slanted post and the back window down a dad bit more
THat looks really good. You obviously put a lot of time in on that one. Sectioning does help the car out a lot. Chris
Well of course it looks good, but... gotta agree with dirtyt. It looks like a Chevy, not a bad thing though. But it would be cool to make it look good and still keep it's Plymouth personality. If possible...
I don't think that it looks anything like a Chevy. It's still got all of the readily identifiable Dodge parts in place: the flat windscreens, the trunk, the short fenders, the bumpers and if it were a real car, I can imagine it still having the stock grill in it. The worst two items of the car were changed: The roof and the thickness of the body, that's it. I think that it looks great and I think that if it were viewable in real life (3 dimensional as apposed to a single dimensionseen here) that it would be very easy to distinguish the difference between it and a Chevy. Chris
Far be it from me to discourage you -but that, my friend -is gonna take some serious surgery to accomplish that end result.... Photoshop is a great tool for the mockup or prototyping of your project ,But like a pencil drawing its so much easier than the real metal transformation is. Maybe a 51 52 is different than a 49 50 BUT The 49 and 50 do not even look like the car above the angle or plane of the front fender tops are way tilted down to the front..an improvement -yes -but not the way the real car is built at all. the trunk even if the car was sectioned would have to be sectioned MORE than the middle of the body as it is a bubble shaped affair. the front fenders at the headlight are in real world terms about 6" longer than a real plymouth is..... Having said all the above I do however tend to agree with you the Plymouths/Dodges are a real candidate for custom modifications, just do not ***ume a shave and haircut are gonna result in a complete facelift.....its MUCH MORE than that.....
As long as we're getting crazy with Photoshop... It also needs to have the front fenders rotated so they slope slightly towards the rear instead of forward. IMHO - Pretty much all old cars have great custom potential. Some are just easier than others.
Damn, that was such a good photo to start with that I could not resist. And I'm procrastinating doing actual work. I've known a couple of people who have attempted chopping this body style but this is how I would do it if it were mine. I'm picturing a Kaiser front window as the rear window to make it even more unqiue, but an otherwise mild custom treatment.
Thanks for the replies.I appreciate your enthusiasm for Custom Cars. DIRTYT and epinut,I'm with loogy and also think the car is clearly identifiable as a Plymouth. While photochopping I tried to make it all Plymouth and it absolutely wasn't my intention to make it look like "an other" car.As much as I like loogy's idea to extend the rear fenders,I didn't do it to the car just to keep it Plymouth.Bryan, you got a Chevy in your garage.I think you must know and see the differences best... choprods,OF COURSE this car would take a lot of serious surgery.I'm perfectly aware of this fact.I don't plan to build such a car.I just wanted to show the beauty hidden somewhere in a stock '51 Plymouth.Just consider this as something like a Steve Stanford sketch.Inpiration, that's all... I didn't modify the front fenders in any way and also didn't extend them.I only frenched the headlights so I don't know what you particularly are talking about.Regarding your comment "...just do not ***ume a shave and haircut are gonna result in a complete facelift.....its MUCH MORE than that.....",please watch the pic below.Shave and haircut...I know,I'm a smart-*** and photochopping is easy and realizing this ain't but again,it's nothing more than inspiration... cleatus, what you did to the front fenders is excellent and it surely helps the car to look even more *****in'.Good eye like speedaddict said.I also made another pic on which I did something similar and also modified the rear fenders but didn't want to post that one as I thought just the sectioning is tuff enuff.Besides,I think the reflection on the pic accentuates the downward pointing fenders even more. Nonetheless, great modification with lots of effect for the whole look of the car.And yes, many old cars have great custom potential and I just wanted to show the potential of one... flash, your photochopped Plymouth is cool and shows another way to chop the top.I'd like to see the rear of this one as I absolutely can't imagine how it looks.Btw,how are you doing ? Like I previously mentioned I'm actually not really into sectioned cars and I know how much work is involved to accomplish this.I was curious to see the "same" car unsectioned and you can see the outcome below. The top has less chop which works better with the stock height body. Also gave it a more taildraggin' stance which I prefer even more.( Just saw this photoshop mod did bring the side trim out of position,damn...) The body is completely stock.Just frenched headlights, shaved tail-lights,custom skirts, custom trim and most obvious, the Carson style top.So just the "basic" custom work...
This is a great post. I love looking at the different possibilities - especially in a body style that is usually overlooked for serious custom fodder. Anyone can make a killer car out of a Mercury. Ugly ducklings require more creativity, but as you can see here - the results can be outstanding. We really should do more of this Fantasy Custom stuff. I mean there are often photoshop request posts but they are usually so limited: "Can I see some supremes on this" "Can I see it in green" and "Give me some ideas, but I DON'T want to chop it" - not that there's anything wrong with posts like that, far from it, but ... Way more fun to go crazy and just look at the possibilities. Sure it would be a ton of work to do in real life, but that's why they invented the term "radical custom"
This IS a great post Frenz- I did not mean any disrespect - Just meant to indicate the amount of metal work it really involves for any of us who might not be aware..... I was referring to the 49 Plymouth I have here in the shop now, in reguard to the fender comment. It is built in such a fashion where the front peak of the hood is about 6" AHEAD of the headlight area on the fenders and they are almost perfectly LEVEL from the point on the door where their line commences forwards to the headlight itself....That is what I meant in that statement-I suppose a 51 52 such as is your starting point is probably a little different and has a hood with a less blunt point and a shorter length hood as well? the changes to the trunk lid you did are good looking and helps that area a lot....
cleatus,I fully understand what you say regarding Mercs.Nonetheless,I only know about a handful which I really like.Of course it's all a matter of taste.Mercurys have such a great styling right from the factory.Just lower the car and you already have a winner. Some people make changes just for the sake of change,to make the car look "different" and this is a big mistake especially on Mercs.Just refine its styling. That's all... choprods,I didn't take this as any kind of disrespect.I just didn't know what you were referring to.I do know now.Sorry for giving you this feeling. Just like you also said in your Plymouth chop and hardtop-post,extending the area between the trunk lid and roof really makes a huge difference and is a must for these cars.I stated the body of the unsectioned Plymouth shown above as stock, didn't mention this modification...don't know why.I guess I just forgot during the process as it seems so naturally... Here's the Plymouth one more with chopped steel roof.Of course the area between roof and trunk is extended as well.B-post's are heavily slanted for a fast look even when standing still.Taildraggin' stance would look better,I know.I'm not sure regarding the side trim. Also made one with simpler trim but this one catches all the elementary/fundamental styling lines and brings them together in one...just some photochoppin' for those who care...
Whoa, I totally missed this post somehow. Sorry bout that. Thanks for the pat on the back. I really dig the carson top idea witht the buick side trim. SWEET. This car has a lot more potential than it did at first glance. I really love it when someone puts up a difficult project - I love a challenge. The uglier the car you start with the cooler it would be after it's modified. Thanks again.
Hey Cleatus,If anyone else posted this Id say "Your ****in nuts, that would be over the line" but...I remembered what you did to your front fenders.Fine Coachbuilding
Thanks Broman. The trim is surely inspired by '53 Buick side trim but actually is "custom-made".Well,on the pic that is...Generally,I think this kind of trim goes pretty good with Carson tops just like you say as it echoes/mirrors the roof line. And yes 00 MACK,what I did with photoshop, cleatus does in reality...he does outstanding and impressive work,I fully agree.
Great photoshop stylin' guys...but why is everyone so bent on this car? LOL! I guess I'm one of the few that actually think it's factory shape is pretty cool. To me it's kind of formal lookin' in some twisted way. I think they look great just shaved, dropped, and cool rollin' stock added. I had one for a very short time (kick!) and became very intimate with it's lines. They may have a couple odd ones but it gives the car it's character. That said I've seen a couple that were chopped up, and yeah they looked good...but they still looked like chebbies. Olson ----------- Shop Smart...Shop S-Mart
How 'bout this one? Would be (relatively) easy to do, and it would keep everyone's heads scratching. If you did it right, no one would know you did anything. Or maybe I'm stupid. I don't know.
Frenz, You're ****in amazing!!!! You have totally hit the nail on the head with that one. I am taking my car in on wednesday of next week to chop it and I will take this pic as reference. This is tops! Thanks for all the chops you have done to my car. You have been an inspiration. Thanks you much! ******Knuckles BTW...are you interested in chopping another one for me??
Frenz..! How are you?!! A friend of mine has a car like this... An all original one. He's an awesome Photoshopper too and lowered and chopped his car on the computer.. For fun. I'll show him these pics too. How's the progress on your Pan.........??????????
I've always liked the 2 door Plymouths, this thread obviously shows that there is tons of potential in one of these as well. Not just as a fun cruise-night hopper, but as a legitimate show-stopping kustom cl***ic. I think 2 biggest problems facing the factory styling of the 49-52 Plymouths are 1) The outrageously tall roof line and 2) the disproportionate shortness of the trunk in comparison to the hood and p***enger compartment. Both of these problems are remedied with the said chop and slight section. By scaling the rest of the car down slightly, the proportions match up, the stars align, and you've got yourself one stunning kustom, with or without B pillars. Looking at the before and after here is like watching that reality show, "The Swan". Start out with one awkward, messed up piece of work, perform some major sugery, and wind up with a real hottie!!!
