I,m getting ready to paint my 53 and I have some surface rust I have to deal with. What is the best way to deal with this stuff? Some of it is fresh and some of it I found under old primer.
    Thanks

Phosforic(sp) Acid, sold under names like "Metal Prep" will take of light surface rust.Your local autobody supply will have some.

Electric angle grinder with a knotted-type wire cup brush worked for me.

As for metal prep liquids, I found that "Metal Works #79 works well, so does Basco's Prep 'N Prime (or is it Prime 'n Prep) for a few bucks cheaper. Actually Prep 'n Prime works better, I think.

Thanks guys. Igot on PPG web site and they have a metal cleaner and metal conditioner ,it leaves a zinc phosphate coating (I believe thats what it said). Since i'm going to use PPG paint should I go with their product?
    Thanks

3M makes some excellent pads for stripping paint and rust off. They go on a die grinder and resemble a scotch brite pad.

Any of the metal prep liquids should deliver the same result because they've all got the same active ingredient p-acid. Just be sure to cover up when you use the stuff cause it'll burn your skin, eyes, sinuses, lungs and any other part of your body it comes in contact with. Use acid-resistant gloves, goggles and a mask when you use the stuff. And if you're gunna be sloppy you might want to get a plastic face shield! I used this stuff on the back-side of a roll pan that was on the back of a truck and I got some on my arm and neck and it burned like crazy (I had to lay under the truck to get to the rust). And wash up BEFORE you take a leak after using this **** too -- you don't want it on your junk!

I been trying the Picklex 20
    It seems to work nice.
I got the paint off my car and its going to be in bare
metal for a bit. It took the surface rust right off
Nothing real heavy but it works like the PPG
and Dupont Acids/ Metal Prep Cleaners
and also acts as a Primer/Weld through Primer.
Just don't get its wet cuz it water soluble.

PS: I got mine from Len at Autobodystore.com
This is the Buick with The stuff on it..........

Painted on rust, now I think I've heard it all. Maybe I could sell some "patina" off my Merc to these goldchainers...nah, they wouldn't want to get their Tommy Hilfiger slacks dirty... [IMG]

The rust I'm dealing with is nothing like what CharlieLed has going on. Just old surface rust under the old primer. I ground it off but there is a stain and I just want to make sure its DEAD. Thanks for the info guys. Don't know about the relatives in Ok. TV but very well could be.

    Thanks

Evaporust, prep & etch, phosphoric acid, are popular. Mol***es, citric acid, electrolysis work for submersion, active threads 9n all of them so I won't go into detail here.

If you're having trouble searching, go to google, type in jalopyjournal then your search topic, it will bring up results and link.
