we looked at a 53 Studebaker today and it had been 327 powered using this mount Is this from a 64-66 Stude (Canadian) which came with a 283 or a aftermarket? The car originally came with a 6 .. stu in simpson 022.JPG

That's a very interesting question because I think I have the same mount in my car. I was looking at it the other day and wanted to figure out where it came from.

    Sorry I couldn't help you.

I had a 53 Studebaker with a 283 Chevy in it years ago. The swap was done with a kit that contained the Hurst mount shown, a flat aluminum transmission adapter, and a special adapter plate for the middle crossmember. Literally made it a bolt in swap and the sbc fit better than the stock engine. Lost a few pounds too.

If it's an old Hurst saddle mount, which it does look like, it should say HURST stamped into it. What are the frame mounts? Those are too hard to see because everything appears to be the same color, rust.

  7. Was offered this hurst adapter today. Owner says its for the first ever chevy smallblock (265). Is it so or will it work on 283 also and other chevys. Cant understand if there is a one year only thing? It was ordered to Sweden in the 60's but never ever used. Would be cool to have in my 55 Commander

If it was never used why is there no rust around the bolt holes? Not that it matters.

It is a Hurst mount, and the kit first used a modified Stude crossmember to adapt '55-57 Chevy bell hsg. and mounts and when I bought one they had changed to a fabricated crossmember that did the same thing.
Only problem was that the Stude used an under the seat heater with the heater core under the p***enger seat with fresh air ducted to it. The duct hose went above that crossmember and then into an airbox under the floor and into the heater core under the seat. The original crossmember had a dropped area for the hose to go between the floor and the crossmember that wasn't present in the Hurst fabricated crossmember and the hose had to be mashed almost flat and very little air reached the heater core.
Norrland, the Chevy engines had the holes for that mount for at least up into the 70s I know, but at some point later on I think they may have omitted them. Not sure however, if the big 8" harmonic balancer will clear though.
