I am building a '27 full fendered T coupe. I have come to where I need to get the front axle. I have searched the forum and can't find a thread I read back some time about, what width axle to use. I'm going to use a Ford 4" dropped I beam. I have a couple, I was going to have one dropped, but I decided to just buy one already dropped. I want to have the tires sit in the middle of the fenders. Right now I don't have a front wheel picked out to use, something with 5 -12 spokes.

Anyone with a fendered T show me some pictures, and tell me what the king pin to king pin is on theirs.

    Thanks, Pat

I hate when that happens, and it happens a lot. I think the Model A axle will be good for you.

  3. the width and offset of your wheels , the size of the tires and even what brakes you are using will effect what width axle you need

  4. That perfect fit is a real challange. When buying from venders you can end up with a large pile of stuff that isn't exactly what they said it would be. When dealing with Axles it's even more difficult. I have a pile of Dropped Axles. They are all Ford axles to start with. Here is a photo just to show you some of what's different. Even the drop amount can be different from different vender to another depending on How they measure the drop. P1010277.JPG
So you need to decide where to spend time verse $$$$. My advice is get a pair of wheels close to what you intend to run in the end. Now accept that they may not be what you actually end up running. Now get some kind of brakes. Be it Drum or Disc, you should know there is a large range of spacing changes from inner bearing to wheel flange on both styles. You need to know desired tread width center line. Now bolt the brakes to the wheel with your spindle on and get a number from wheel center to King Pin. Times that by 2. Now you know what width Axle you need to make the Exact fit you want. Odds are you won't find it. Now you start adjusting. Different wheel off set, different brake systems and so on. Being Kool isn't easy.
Case and Point.. I found the Koolest set of Hubcaps and want to put them on my 51 Ford (avitar) I have had to build a pair of wheels to get them on the car with the restrictions I have due to front brakes. And that's just the way it goes.

Thanks for the advice. I guess I'll get some wheels, and get my brakes on the spindles, and go from there. I am in the middle of my "Honey do's " right now, and then I'll get on it.

    Thanks again, Pat

  7. That's a great fit. Now can you give him the rest of the information. Rim width, wheel back space, wheel flange to back of hub.

Verde, Thanks for the pictures, nice looking Tudor, it's the way I want mine to come out.
Do you remember what you used for brakes, and which spindles you used?

Did you have split wish bone, was there any rubbing of the tires on it. I hear that with a 46" and split bone, they don't turn as sharp. Just what I heard. I'm going to try to keep from splitting my wish bone, but I'll know once I get a axle under it.

Anyone with any input as what they used for a front setup is welcome, and wanted. I never turn away from idea's, or help!!!

    Thanks, Pat

I just need a 4" dropped axle, and the caliper mounts, which I'm getting from Speedway. I have the perch mounts, king pins, shackles, spring, shock mounts already (no brake parts yet, but I know what I'm getting). The axle I can get 40 miles from home at, "Gene's" hot rod and antique ford parts. I'll swap one of my stock Ford axles, for a stock Ford dropped one, I don't want a aftermarket one. I just need to know which, king pin to king pin length works the best, for a '27 T with stock fenders.

I was going to use a 4 bar, but decided to try a un-cut wish bone. I'll cut it if I have to, but want to try to fit it. I'm using a F1 gear box.

    Thanks, Pat
