FUCK PPG, there I said it! I painted My racecar with all ppg paint.
That was just last year. I spent near $ 1,500 to totally paint the car throughout. The color Bonzai Blue was $168.00 a quart!!! I about shit Myself.
Try this. search KIRKER automotive paint. I know of three people that have got there 160.00 kit and it came out killer. I just today ordered a 2 part primer @ 37.25 a gallon and a gallon of clear @ 37.25 a gallon. I have a gallon of ppg centari I got for free. Kirker assured Me there hardner and reducer will work fine with it. Reducer is 8.60 a quart and hardner was 11.00 for the gallon.I talked to Tony ph # 1 800 541 0399. They are also a HOK distributor.
Check em out PPG has just got to expensive. FEDER

All i used to use was Duponts Nason select clear, about $120 a gallon with hardener, my supplier turned into a douche, so now I get Westen Refinisher's Select clear from the Sherwin Williams place. It's about $97 a gallon with hardener. Everyone has their preference, but around here no one wants to pay for the high dollar stuff on their cars, and I've gotten use to this stuff and never had issues with it so i like using it.

  7. This price for one gallon of Clear (it's not even paint) is ridiculous.

There should be a nationwide boycot on paint until these folks get their pricing where it should be.

I'd like an explanation why paint prices have exploded in the past 7-8 years.

Does Dupont still make DULUX enamel?

As long as you keep paying for it, they'll keep chargin that for it. It's like bitchin about the price of gas and driving everywhere you go. It won't end 'til you make it end...

If you want the best use Sikkens. It's always been more than PPG but apparently that's changing. If you to go with *cheap* clear Dupont Nason is decent. I used it on my ZX 'cause I didn't care about the quality (it was just a wreck I built), & the only problem I've seen is it chips eaiser than Sikkens. Depends on whether you want *quality* work or not.

    Extending Prices Astronomically maybe.

But yeah, all this pollution stuff is what drives the costs up. They just pass it on to the consumer - thats business.

I used transtar once for a touch up, and I ran the holy hell out of it. It flowed ALOT easier than what I was used to. I've never had a 4 foot sag before then!:D The guy that recommended it still loves the stuff to this day, he can lay it down super slick though, looks like a robot painted it!

Omni is alright to work with, not hard to spray, but from my autobody instructor tells me, it doesn't last the greatest... says it's not as durable and will fade out/chalk/oxidize/whatever faster. Alot of the students here will use a cheap omni base and put a bit mree expensive clear on it, like DuPont 7900s (most of us here use DuPont since they sponsor our training program). I can't give you a good idea of price tho since we get it at discount, tax free, so i dunno what retail is around here.

I painted my '69 98 conv, with single stage Omni. It sucked ass. I put 2 gallons of that crap to get it to cover..... When i went back to get the second gallon, the guy told me that he wanted to warm me it was very thin. I told him I wished he would have I pissed up a rope for a month getting the car ready and now had to scuff it again. He felt bad and treated me right. But I was still pissed off. That car was big and I had to do it myself.... I know Waaa...Whaaaa..

I have used Transtar on about 15 cars and have had no problems with it. It's been on my own car for 4 years with Wisconsin winters and still looks good. But the price of it has been going up also. I haven't bought any lately so I don't know what it goes for now. Brian

My family owns a small Ford dealership and my brother (runs bodyshop) was told that it's California's fault the prices are going up. And yes it's all about the environment. My brother was telling me that he was told it's cheaper for the manufacturer to make all their paints and stuff comply with Cali law, than make two different kinds of paint. The market in Cali is too large to justify the expense of two lines of product (Cali/non-Cali).

So in effect Cali law dictates NY law. Total horse sheet!

But I suspect that the real reason for the price jumps is part real due to manufacturin changes cost and part corporate greed (how much can I get away with charging?).

I call BS on this one.

When I buy polyurethane for aircraft it's a lot cheaper per gallon. Why? Because they know you won't pay 200 per gallon if you need 10 gallons. So it's the old supply and demand adage. Check with your local aircraft paint supplier. They offer bc/cc as well as single stage.

Besides, how could PPG sell Omni cheaper if it was all based on epa regs?

Yea prices are getting ridiculus.I have shot BASF Diamont,Dupont,Standox,Sherwin Williams,PPG,Omni,Western Select and Southernpolyurethanes. BASF was expensive 12 years ago and tempermental same as PPG now. By far the best i have every used and still feel is the best is Herberts Standox. My local jobber sold out and the new jobber that took his place took out Standoxand replaced it with PPG. I hate it. I like the OMNI line so far but its stll pretty new to me. I used western select clearr a while and i liked it for my cheaper jobs and it has lasted very well. It just depends on if you are a bodyshop buying larger quanities or a smallcustom paint business like myself. Everyone has their opinion about paint. I guess i have mine too. Western has gone up about 25.00 more since i started using it over 5 years ago. Just my .02

I use Nason Select Clears...456 or 457. I've even shot Nason urethane Clears over straight enamels (not recommended) about a half dozen times and NEVER had a problem..Inexpensive and dries crystal clear

Guess when they found out guys were getting 15 to 20 grand to paint out a car in a 1 color enamel, rub the orange peel out yourself when you get it home job, the paint companies wanted a better cut of the action.

I agree, I've used Omni and I don't like it at all.

I agree with the masses that DuPont Nason clear is pretty good shit considering how cheap it is.

But all I ever use on my cars is single stage acrylic enamel paints. I think base/clear paints look too modern on an old car, unless you're doing a wild 60's flake/fade job. So all the paint I buy is Limco Supreme acrylic enamel. It's really cheap and I like the way it flows out and buffs nice too. Just got done spraying my '55 Dodge two tone black and green, a gallon of Limco black was $42 and the custom mixed green was $65. Used most of it but it looks nice and it was cheap.

Single stage fades in the sun. Clear cuts the UV & "prevents" fading.

Well, I was a PPG Rep. for a few years then started up my own body shop and used PPG of course! Then I needed to re-evaluate my finances because of the price hikes they always do so I will still use a good bace like Concept or Global but never Omni because of the lack of pigment to binder ratio in it(I mixed formulas for them every day!) so its not good base! But I actually found a clear thats cheap and not bad for durability,UV,and rework ability....its called "Montana Big Sky" sound like crap I know!!!!! but its actually a great clear that is low priced and dries clear not yellowed and is very shootable for beginners too! Good luck and hope this helps?

although I prefer to use ppg the omni clear is an excelent alternative. i have used it on a few small jobs and it has held up well. it does have a tendency to run and after you sand the runs out it gets cloudy. other than that it is not a bad clear. it is also compatible with all ppg products. use the high solids clear with slow topcoat hardener and you should be just fine, stay away from their quck clear it is junk
