Currently in the market for a new (old) ride and doing everything in my power to afford it. I've been selling off anything and everything I own that isn't nailed down. I've sold everything from clothes to spare bike parts (i will likely wish I hadn't sold someday), to a roof rack off my truck. I've been taking on extra side jobs and working 10-12 hour days just so I can have another old car. I've been eating on the cheap, drinking on the cheap (which I usually do anyways but had to give up Jack for a while), and freezing my a** off because I havn't been running the furnace in my house that much in an effort to avoid huge heating bills.

Tell us what you've done to afford your cars. I'm sure many of you have similiar stories of begging, borrowing, stealing and or freezing your a** off just to afford or keep a car.

In the past year I bought a 63 Willy's fixed and sold it and a late model car (who cares what kind) to part it out. All in the name of making money to buy a new one.

Actually, I'm a scrounger... If I see someone "under-utilizing" a parts car, I ask them how much they want for what's left, most times it's free.

I pull anything off that still looks good or is useable (even late model stuff), and use it to trade for stuff (or sell at a well-known auction site) I do need. I also dumpster dive.

I recently bought my 1st house and money is a little tight. I thought maybe that would put owning another old car out of my head for awhile. No sir, I want another now more than ever which is why I've been fighting tooth and nail, grinding it out to save money.

I've been in this house about 5 months and I still don't have very much furniture. Reason: I've been saving money to buy another car! No place in the house to sit, lets go for a drive then.

Ditto, we just bought a house and have very little furniture. I've, of course, had a resurgance of the itch for a new old car now that we're no longer socking every penny away for 'the house'. I doubt the woman's gonna let me buy another one until I do something with the two cars and three motorcycles I already have...

I have a lady habit as well...

  11. That'll cut into your pocket book quick, fast, and in a hurry!

  12. Mine aint rich or ugly but we're both gettin' some miles on us.:D

I've probably done one of everything to build cars and bikes over the years, but my best bet has always been to let Mrs. Beaner handle the cash. Normally when I think there is just no other way to do it and I've already sold everything that I can she annies up some hot rod cash that she has had stashed for just that purpose.

Don't get me wrong, she's great. Until a week ago, her only vehicle was a '58 Olds that's not running. Now, that's a woman. I'll get back on track soon. For now, I'm having trouble resisting the temptation to go get a home equity loan and buy something that runs, drives, and stops to play with - we ended up buying a house so cheap that we had what's called 'instant equity' and about $30k worth of it - now every fucking bank from here to Albquerque is sending me mail. That's almost as much money as I make in a year. But, that money's better tied up in bricks and mortar than a car that some drunk asshole will prolly hit as it sits in front of my dream house. Fuck it, I'll get there. Now, if only that $800 50 chevy wasn't in Wisconsin. And ran, drove, and stopped. I did manage to keep what I had, though. I offered to sell my bike, but she wouldn't have it. Like I said, a hell of a woman...

    Hey Deville,
I feel your pain. I actually lived in my 52 briefly when I was younger and money was extra tight. It was a choice between payin' the rent or fixin' the car. I fixed the car dammit. It was the right choice. I guess it makes us appreciate them even more when we have to sacrifice for 'em.

    regards,

You can sleep in your car, but you can't drive your house.

Selling my wife's late model (by HAMB standards) to buy mine. She's disabled and hasn't been able to drive in 5 years, it just took this long for her to be OK with selling the only new car she's ever had. She's looking forward to the panel truck project now.

    Beg? nope
Borrow? nope...well maybe one thing, Roadstar's bias ply WWW while I decided if WWW was the look I wanted on Big Olds:D
    Steal? NO
Sell? nope, really don't have anything worth selling

When I need extra money I get a second job. Did this two winters ago when I was trying to save money for a huge trip in Big Olds (Ego-Rama). Worked 9 months, 7 days a week, over 80 hours a week. Actually had a "third" job too, painting ladies clothing and selling at art shows on the weekends. Second job was retail at a scrapbook store. My "real" job at the time didn't pay all that great but I knew it was a great company to work for so I was willing to start at the bottom and work my way up. It's been three years now and I have a really cool position with decent pay and benifits.

I'm a firm believer in working hard for what you want and if you work hard you will be rewarded.

  27. HRLC is giving good advice here. Work a second job, or whatever means you can, the hard work will pay off in the end. Borrowing money for your old cars is not a good idea. Borrowing to buy a house, or to have a reliable daily driver car is OK. You need something to get you to work that is not going to cause trouble half the time you want to go to work. Notice that that does not say buy a new car, it says a reliable car. You can drive an old car as a daily, just make sure it is not a piece os shit.

Shit... I know that feeling tooooo damned well. My engine's mosly toast... and I know of one that I could get on the cheap, perfect swap, but I don't have a dime to spare for it, and I know I'll spend 4 or 5 times as much later. I'd do just bout anything to make a few bux right now.

    no begging, no stealing

but I have sold cars or car stuff to buy cars or car stuff

and technicaly have borrowed too, when buying my last two houses I borrowed enough to have some car money left over after everything was taken care of.
lowest rate and deductible interest too :)

    I also go without,
I hate shopping for consumables, not welding rod or Argon, those are necessities,
I mean clothes and food, what a waste of money, car parts last a lot longer than a bag of groceries or a new shirt

I've said it before and I'll say it again: COINSTAR " The ghetto ATM"
Pennies, nickels and dimes are still money, I think. People drop 'em and don't bother to pick 'em up. Yours for the taking. If you're are too embarassed to go to the market and dump your change in it (a chick might see you, loser) then you don't deserve a hot rod. Use the cash to get into and park at the swap (Pomona) it's like getting in for free! :D -stick
