Event Coverage What The Hell Just Happened?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Ryan, Feb 1, 2016.

  1. Amazing and so cool. I was at the show on move in night checking out the field. Looked at the merits of one, the faults of another, the paint on one, the metalwork on another. And all the while there was this plain"ish" one over in the corner that your eyes just kept going back to. You kept wondering why that one was there in this sea of all the other overdone participants. It was cool as hell, but how could it play ball with all the other kids on this particular playground?
Guess what bitches? It stole the ball and ran away with it all.
    Right on.

Definitely a cool car and the fact that the owner got his fingers dirty building and driving it, yup, hard core credit....but..... Honestly, I don't think there was any real hard competition

    The car is "correct"... Period.

The others were kinda confused, the blue hemi roadster, cool car... Wrong tires.

The dark blue 28-29 roadster, a near miss with those headlights...

The car is correct, all the way around.

Like some of the others posting here the color seemed like an unorthodox choice to me, but even with that (and perhaps even partially as a result of that) it is undeniable that the car flat-dab nails "the look" and does so with a tasteful, understated elegance that most builders miss by miles. The knowledge that it is being driven makes me smile both inside and out.

  4. In this world of rock paper scissors it would appear that talent has now over-ruled money. Truly a beautiful roadster.

For most young car nuts, one of the best parts of the day was the drive-in, (Bob's, Harvey's etc.) just about anytime of day or night. As we've gotten older, we've realized that we experienced a REAL car show everyday. We had a lot of things on our minds at that age. Like other stuff in our lives, we thought it would be like this forever. To this day we tell tall tales about what happened 'One Saturday Night'.
I can't remember much about any car show I ever went to. The tales keep gettin' taller. These so-called 'rod runs' are starting to go down that road too. I enjoy seeing a home built car pulling in all bright and shiney with a warm (or hot) hood with a few rock chips in the enamel paint up front.

  8. One of the coolest things on the car are the knobs. They were made out of a chunk of paint that was made up of layers upon layers of different colours that was taken from Darryl's Grandfather, Dad and Uncles old shop. The shift knob can be seen in this picture.

I hadn't heard of that sort of thing until recently when I came across the story of how some of that material was "mined" from the spray equipment of some of the car manufacturers.
    Beautiful material to be sure.
Who would have thought that you could do that with what is basically overspray, just years and layers of it.
    Pretty neat for sure.

By the way, beautiful hot rod, it's about time real hot rods were recognized for what they are.
All that time toiling in the garage is what it's all about.

I might have walked right past this car if it had been parked outside rather than being in a prominent space adjacent to the hall's centerpiece, the giant AMBR trophy. From a distance it looks like a lot of other roadsters. In fact, having been at the show and looked at it, I now find that I missed the very cool tail lights and rear window. Upon close inspection it does have extreme attention paid to detail although the displays keep one at a distance from the show's top contenders and it is very difficult to see their details, especially with a car like this where just about everything is done in dark colors and the hall's lighting is minimal.

I was very drawn to Chris Evans' '31 roadster; it was my own favorite of the show. It's baby blue color is the same color as the very first hot rod I can remember seeing as a kid (late 50's in remote Montana, where decent hot rods were almost non-existent). My heart also pumped to the hemi engine and dragster-style headers. Standing still the car looks like it is doing 100 mph. I do think the chrome on this car was overdone...so much on the top side of the engine that it was difficult to see details and distracted from the rest of the car.

In any case, the quality of builds was noticeably up this year and competition has spawned more creativity and ever greater financial investments. Personally, my favorite hall is always the suede palace which - as a great addition this year - was followed by the SCTA / Bonneville hall.

Yup, I will cop to our very own Chip "Need Louvers" Quinn punching my louvers....other than that 99.9999% me. That being said I know my roadster will never be AMBR "build" quality, but I love knowing it has AMBR winning styling courtesy of my Uncle Ray, and love even more the blood sweat and tears are mine.

Huge Congrats to Darryl and his wife for bringing the big trophy back from the dark side!!!!

Great seeing a "Real Hot Rod" get the nod!!!

PS....the color....says to me, some GI right out of WWII gets a hold of a few gallons of Surplus Olive Drab, and some Clear Lacquer....makes a bit of sense to me.

I'll answer the title. What just happened is "we" have influenced the landscape in permanent fashion. Now I don't mean everyone who thinks they get it, or everyone who really does, it's simply an overdue professional nod to what hot rods mostly are. The car may indeed be finished beyond all get out and detailed to the tune of the best that billet had to offer. Do that to "our" stuff and bitchin things start to come around. I might take just a grain of contempt toward the comments about the folk who show and don't win, what they really feel about it. Mine? I don't give a shit and it is about my fellow hoodlums, racers and gearheads. My clients? Well I want them to win their venues, it's just that so few enter the "circus". Once upon a time one of my favorite restoration projects entered and swept up some serious creds. Right hand raised, I half assed expected it and at the same time could care less. Hard to put in words what that is and I'm not sure contempt is an element. Maybe ambivalence is more like it. I can't wait to see the TRJ feature so I can enjoy it but past that, we should all be able to enjoy that which made it happen and maybe have just an extra sip of coffee's worth of respect for this shit. Clearly the GNRS judges had more.

Great Car, Great Guy. So Stoked. My favorite part was his instagram post before the show of him getting all the bugs off that caked up the grill.

Not sure but I read that the engine was an Edelbrock " crate" . If it's true I've been thru the Edelbrock shop in Torrance and saw what "crate" means to them. It's as good as any custom engine I've ever seen and built to your spec... Good looking roadster, I'm glad it was picked..

I'd say that pretty well sums it up. Not only as a proper traditional car but as a hot rod that doesn't have extra pieces stuck on for "visual effect".
I've seen who knows how many photos of the car in event coverage and on here since last spring and it does not have a single bad angle to it. Look at Toms photos or study the feature photos in Rodder's Journal #69 and there are no bad angles on the car that you see on too many cars. Then you study it close and all the very simple but absolutely trick details show up that blend to make a complete car.
