I don't know if you guys know that i work for
Cival Service on Edwards AFB, but anyway one of the jobs i have is taking old disgarded Air craft parts and other bulk junk to an accumulation scrap pickup point called "DURMO" Here the parts get sorted and jammed into mountains of scrap metal, wood, plastic etc...
So anyway their shutting our yard down and moving the operation down into the Longbeach,So. Cal. area , and in doing so, their bringing all the scrap metal from around the base to get crushed and sent out for the last time.
We pulled into the yard with our 40' flatbed and pulled along side the now even bigger than before pile of metal that a crane with giant jaws had worked on. In the mass of twisted metal and and flatened filing cabnets i could just make out the shape of old defunct zink chromate green Bomber seats. I really could not believe what i was seeing crushed and bent into potatoe chip shapes throughout the pile, liturally as big as a two story apartment building. Dont know if they were fighter or Bomber seat blanks couldnt really tell anymore, but there were quite a few of them (What i could count walking around the pile was 29 just on the outside. No telling what was deeper in.
Like i said i almost cryed when i realized what they were , but when i asked if i could grab some to maybe salvage the guy that runs the place said no way they were already weighed in, and the scap was already sold to a company somewhere overseas.
At the time i was thinking i could go get my camara back in the car at my work station , and get some pictures of the "abomination" , but i couldnt film in that area anyway.
Believe me, it was heart wrenching to see what could have made a lot of dudes day bent and caved in like that.
If only i had of known that they were coming i know i could have nabbed a few.
Thats alright, the guy that refused me taking a couple is going to need a job when the yard shuts down in a few weeks, and he's already scheduled to come work with us, so.......he'll be the new guy....... BWAAA-HAA-HAA-HAA!!!
(Im really going to keep my eyes open now!!!)

Thats sux thats you couldn't grab a couple. One or two seats would matter that much to the weight of the pile?

....Oh yeah, steal from the government... with a witness at the yard... during King Georges reign.... Sure, because the tour of the federal prision when you were in school wasn't enough. You wanna go back and stay a bit. Hang around, see if the foods any good....

In the race to be the HAMB's biggest idiot KCRODDER is in a full sprint......dig it?

  8. No KCRODDER is absolutely correct. Stealing from the government/military especially under those circumstances is very stupid. So don't do it. If you are on the recieving end of military justice you won't enjoy it.

What you need to do is get on the mailing list of surplus auctions just like the new owner of this scrap heap did. Register to become an approved bidder and there you are. During the frantic multiple base closings of the early 90s this was very simple. You registered, showed up, made your bid (often unopposed) paid with your preapproved check, loaded up your tonnage, weighed out and hit the road. It was unbelievably easy. When bidding in such large quantity you never know what you will end up with. Sort of like Chrismas morning.:D

I'm sure that some changes have been made given the state of the world now. Particularly regarding surplus high tech materials but scrap metal is scrap metal.

If you really want one I know someone with a pile of his own. I don't know what he wants for them or any of his aircraft stuff but I can ask. PM me if you want.

  9. Bush's dad or Cheney probably are partners with the scrap company or the Bin Ladens LOL

Eh, don't feel to bad. It's ALL going to china where it can be turned into cheap crap for people to buy from harbor frieght, have it break in 2 days and end up back in the land fill in record time!
Pop quize, does anyone know what America's NUMBER ONE gross domestic product is? Take a guess.

It grieves me to see them old pics of huge fields full of bombers and such, hundreds of them, just laying there. Are they still there, scrapped, re-used, rotted or what?

Any chance of a guy blagging a decent V12, or whatever, aero engine for a project? :)

Defense Reutilization and Marketing Office (DRMO). Or "Dr. MO" as we call 'em up here at Nellis. And YES! There is some awesome shit that goes over there to get auctioned. Lathes, mills, etc. Completely untouchable (unless the right person owes you big I guess) and if you even think about snaggin' anything you're going to be up to your ears in alligator shit! It actually used to be open to the public here. You could go in there and buy scrap metal, misc. military crap, plane windows, seats, etc. Doors are now closed and is accessable by authorized people only. Bummer big time!!!

piss and moan, piss and moan... get a new line...

Benzine440 speaks the truth, and the fact is more people have gone to federal prision over white collar crimes during this presidency than during any other. That's not politics folks, that's a fact. And when someone suggest stealing from the governement it's an IMPORTANT fact. That in the entire tounge in cheek post of what would happen if you did steal those seats, a small number of mindless group thinkers saw the word bush and turned this into a political conversation is just pathetic. You could have just as easily commented on the salvage yard, the prison tours, the prision food, prision in general, but no... People like Muttley are too busy being small minded to know how to do anything more than attack obvious remarks. You could have commented on anything else, but you didn't, and that's your fault, so don't blame me.

Speaking of idiots, muttley, where have you been. Some 50 post and not a peep out of you? I thought hillbillies were suppose to friendly and all.... did you get your head stuck up your ass again? Your momma shoulda taught you those arn't chocolate kisses in your britches. You go on and dig it though buddy....:D

Yes they did used to be open to the public, I knew a mechanic that about 20 years ago bought probably 20,000 $ worth of hi quality tools -- Snap on , Cornwall, Blackhawk, Starret --all good stuff in a huge rollaway chest for 15 cents a pound at a Nellis auction . Cost him about 100.00 bucks or such a matter !!!
on the other hand , The Gov't has ALWAYs been less than pleasant about folks who steal from them , knew a guy that was stealing & shipping home a 50 calibre M/G a piece at a time during Nam-- the last part got shipped , & the goons from whatever dept. does that sort of stuff ( CID?) showed up with his ( Their) M/ gun all assembled & arrested him . Spent some time in the Hoosegow for it he did .
