I have a cad engine, thought it was a 472. Bought a dress up kit for it and it didn't fit. How do tell a 472 from a 500. It is a late 70's I think. Thanks PHAT
472 and 500 **** will interchange, so if you've got 500 valve covers and they don't fit, your engine is neither a 500 or a 472. If it's a late 70's engine and your parts are not fitting it's probably a 425. 425's are 180-195 hp engines and they look like the 472/500 but they're different. If it's a 368 you've really got a boat anchor.
Thanks for the info. Is there a web site I can get , that will tell me what engine it is? Where to look for #'s and date codes ect?
Lots of info about the big caddy mills on the cadillac power forum click eer : http://www.cadillacpower.com/forum/ Most of the 472 500 blocks will have ' 5200' cast onto the transmission flange near the oil sender.
Is a 425 worth screwing with.. i've got a strong running one that i was going to use in my next project. of course with the hopes i could one day swap in a 472 or 500. Will the motor mounts and such match up??
The 425 will work fine and have enuf power to make a small hot rod get up and go....a 472 or a 500 will bolt right up to the 425 mounts
If memory serves, the difference between a 472 and a 500 is stroke, so you'd have to take a plug out and measure that, ***uming the engine turned over. EDIT: Yes, that's correct. This site also shows how to (try and) differentiate a 425 from it's bigger brothers. http://www.geocities.com/MotorCity/Pit/9364/guide/Engineid.html
