Chevrolet Heater Core

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by james1savage, Feb 7, 2016.

  1. Gents, the heater core in my 50 styleline has gone south and I'm in search of a replacement. Tried to have the old one rebuilt but it's $450 for a new core which seems excessive to me.

Does anyone know where I can source one or do you have one to sell? I haven't had much luck so far.

    I appreciate your comments.

Do a search on I think Chevy Talk or one of the other early Chevy car sites, I remember seeing a post from someone that retrofitted a Chevy pick up one into the shoe box housing. It did not look hard to do, and you never see the core inside the housing anyway.
I will be doing the same thing on my 52 as I do not have one in there right now.

I just retrofit one from a mid eighties ford exp in my 54 chevy, it is different than a 50 chevy, jlckmj is correct, I think I seen that on a you tube video. You might do a search there.

Please don't buy anything from the truck and car shop of Orange, CA. Even if they did have one it wouldn't fit and they don't care once they have your money.

is it a round or rectangular core?

I got a new round heater core replacement from Br***works, it fit my 57 truck, works ok. kind of expensive though

if you have the standard round heater I would try to adapt a square heater from the local parts house or "auto recycler" I would think the deluxe heater core could be rebuilt fairly cheap.

  11. I replaced a heater core on a '90 Ranger pickup I had years ago. It was dimensionally about the same as the core on the '30s vintage Hot Wave heater in my '38 Ford pickup. It had the hose connections in different locations but it could have been made to work on the old Hot Wave. Take your old core to a really good parts store--there is going to be a late model core on the shelf that is close enough that you can make it work.

My buddy with a radiator shop just recored one for a '55 Chevy. Think it was around $75. better find another shop that doesn't have *** on their mind, cause that one wants to screw you.

Around here to have mine recored was $350.00 it has a 3 inch thick block.
It would have been $75.00 if it had been a 2 inch block. That's why I did the retro fit. Cost $33.00 for the core plus some fittings.

  14. Thanks fellas. It's a square core so I'll see what I can match up to a late model replacement.
