Projects Ring and pinion question

    I have a 1940 pontiac deluxe i put a 350ci and th400 the rear is 4.11 gears i b
    believe i wanna put more highway friendly gears in the rear not sure where to look to get some need some direction help lol oh it is the stock rear which i would like to keep

    The stock rear probably won't have much of a gear ratio selection available. Best bet would be a complete rear end swap, so you'll want to figure out the width and wheel bolt pattern you need, as well as what ratio you want. 2.73 to 3.36 is a typical highway rear end ratio, and you probably will get it wrong first try, if you're like most of us.

    Another approach is to leave the rear alone, and change the transmission to an overdrive type.

    Personally I would change the transmission to a 200r or 700r and keep the 4.11 gears. The 400 takes more HP to run and is worth some $$. If your rear is original not very many different gears were available as roads were not what they are today and speed limits were rarely over 55. Good Luck.

    Definately look into an overdrive trans. The 400 is not needed in your application. If you had the power to need a 400 your rear end is too light to survive.

    Yeah thats what the swap came with so i used it and its screamin at 55mph lol
