Real good movie, four stars from the wife and I. The "Folsom prison" shot was great, I could here the record scratches in the background from when I was younger listening to it.

Johnny Cash was a great concert to see, I once saw him and sat third church pew from the front.

Well they gave him his orders in Monroe, Virginia-

Said "Steve, you're way behind time, this is not 38 this is old 97, put 'er into Spencer on time"
Well then he turned around and aid to his black, greazy fireman-"Shovel on a little more coal, and when we hit that White Oak mountain, watch 'Ol 97 roll"

Well then a telegraph come, from Washington station, this is how it read:'That great engineer, that ran 'Ol 97, is lying in Danville dead. He was goin' down the grade makin' 90 miles an hour, the whistle broke into a scream, he was found in the wreck with his hand on the throttle, scalded to death by the steam...Lord,lord'

    or something like that....

Saw it last night. Even my wife who doesn't know squat about Johnny or June like it a lot. Go see it if you get the chance. Well worth the cost of admission.

  8. Million Dollar Quartet.

  9. Correction. I just watched it...again. The collapse was in Vegas. The talk about being banned from the opry, was at the record company was when Johnny was pitching the live record at Folsom.

And I missed the polished americans, AGAIN!!!

Being the big Cash fan I am and having seen almost everything he's ever been interviewed in, the old 60's biography video, all the stuff on CMT and the Highwaymen specials + concerts etc. I thought I was going to be in for a let down when I went to see this movie.

You could pick things apart here and there, and I had heard that one of his daughters had left the first screening 5 times because she got so upset at the way they protrayed her mom (Vivian- his first wife) so that made me question all that I had read (I read 2 of his biographies, including the one he wrote.)

But I liked the movie- I really liked it. A couple of the scenes where Phoenix was singing on stage made my hairs stand on end- something that happens when I REALLY dig something.

Knowing that Johnny and June had a hand in it before they passed made me feel like it would be a better movie.

    Overall 8 out of 10.

I thought that was a little odd, but I wasn't sure...

  12. Did anyone spot a black Nash? Red first series Chevy pickup? Couple of locals claim their rides were used in the filming. Guess I will have to see the movie to find out if they are full of it.

  13. Great movie!!! I could have stood a little more on a few more chapters in his life but still a great movie. Great casting for JC and June.

Just a heads up, the DVD was released yesterday. Yep, the wife bought it while I was at work and when I arrived home she suprised me with it and asked "do you notice anything else". "Ah, no". I am wearing all black in memory of "Cash". The DVD was pretty good and it has the deleted scenes.

Maybe I'm the only one who didn't really like the movie? It wasn't terrible and I whatched it all the way through but there just wasn't anything to get excited about...and I like Johnny Cash. Casting for June Carter was good though, whatsherface really looked like her.

We lived in Madison, Tn. (Nashville 'burb) for several years in the mid seventies. The country music people were pretty visible in the community at that time. I saw a lot of people that were extremely talented and personable on the stage, but pretty usual when they were "off stage". Johnny Cash had PRESENCE all the time; there was just something electric about him every time I saw him.

  18. I’m not a nay-sayer, The movie, I’ll buy it, anyhow.

But my RANT, most of you young folks don’t know even know the difference, but it’s a crime what the production of CDs has done to the real music. The modern productions take all of the feeling out of the music, you can’t hear the fingers flappin and sliding on the bull-bass strings, Luther Perkin’s axe grinding out the real tunes, the digitizin’ has smoothed out the wrinkles and the reality of Johnny’s own gift(sometimes even a little rough around the edges) on the gitt-fiddle.

My grandson knows I like Cash so he bought me some CDs for Christmas. I was disappointed when I listened to them, all homoginized, the rough muted out; After my grandson went home, I had to get out the old 33 turntable and play some of the old SUN and COLUMBIA productions to get the feeling back. Made me wish my AMPEX Tube-Amp and turntable with the SHURE ceramic pickup didn't wear out(20 years ago I suppose); I could almost hear Johnny’s unbottoned shirt-sleeve-cuff draggin’ across the pickguard on the old lables, SHARE, COLUMBIA, SUN.

  19. I know they're one of the evil empires but WalMart has a DVD/Soundtrack combo, exclusive to them.

  20. My favorite scene would have been; in 1956, long before the 'opry', at TUCSON GARDEN, Cash was walking around after a song and reached down, pretended to pick up somethin off the deck as if to pick up money,(the croud threw tips in those days); , then he looked shocked, wiped his hand on his pant-leg, and yelled out, "Dang, I thought that was a Quarter!"

(you know, a big glob of spit!)

    RIGHT ON THE MONEY!
hell you can't get a better sound than a record... i love to listen to them... i got alot of old carl perkins, elvis, johnny cash, etc... old rockabilly on record... and if i take the record and put it directly on CD (i can do that) i can take that sound with me in the car... oh yea... and it sounds just as good because it's a single dub... not a copy of a copy of a copy of a copy etc...

    so yea... i got a whole collection of rockabilly CD's i love'em...

pesonally i loved the movie... me being only 20, most of my favorite singers/bands have passed... and it makes me sad that i'll never get to see them... johnny cash being one of the top ones on the list... i love the old 50s rock&roll, my dad got me hooked when i was but a wee snapper.... LOL

i WAS glad to see alot of my favorite singers in there... like Carl perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis (one of my heros), Elvis, etc...

and me playing the guitar has only fueled that fire! now i like all types of music... but there is always a place in my heart for 50s rock & roll...

actually had a chance to see the grand ole opry last memorial weekend... and let me tell you i'll never forget it...

well now i'm starting to ramble... i just love this stuff so much.... hahaha:D

  22. TRUCKS 69. You're proof that youngsters have good taste for real music.

I apologize for my multiple posts, but I just gotta tell you,, as I punch these keys, Listenin' to WANTED MAN, sung at SAN QUENTIN(that was after Luther Perkins died. At the end of this record is PEACE IN THE VALLEY. June Carter, she could hold her own on the guitar, gave him that song she wrote, RING OF FIRE. Now that's a sexual song for sure. Wow, the TENNESEE THREE, precussion, bass, rythm, With Johnnys guitar right out front. Thunk...Thunk...Thunk...

    DEEP..........

I must tell you, fellow HAMGrs, my son plays a pretty mean axe, and has learned to play the instrumental of TENNESSEE FLAT TOP BOX. ....just for his dad.

Great movie,I can only imagine what the jam sessions were like at Sun Records back when Johnny,Carl,Jerry Lee and Elvis were there.Or seeing one of the early tours when they all played together. The song When The Man Comes Around is on the American 4 cd.Alot of good songs on that cd,very stripped down recording style. One of the few movies I'll have to break down and get the DVD.

I recently switched my guitar playing to more of a roots rock/rockabilly style. It's definitely more different than power-chords and distortion. The music speaks to me as I play it. Deke Dickerson was a big influence in me switching my styles.

I have a spare copy of the DVD if anyone is interested. Basically want what was paid for it plus $2.00 to ship. PM me if anyone is interested.

  29. Johnny Cash never meant anything to me until I was in NAMIBIA of all places. I'd never been exposed to his music at all. He died while we were over there....so every morning for the next 3 or so weeks, we'd start the day with "Ring of Fire". From that moment on, it became known as "The Johhny Cash Memorial Tour".......yes, Johnny is spelt wrong, but you get that with Zimbabweans shirt printers, I guess!

  30. ,...did you know that River Phoenix was Joaquin's younger brother...he died young of a drug overdose if I remember rite.
