I've done some searches and I cant find an answer to see if this combo will work. I have all that is needed to do the F2/Buick. I'm running that combo on my A sedan. Any info would be great. Thanks Choosing to not use Buick drums
Me, too. What spindles are you going to use? FWIW, I just mocked up F250 backing plates on 32 spindles (with Early V8 Garage kit), 40 hubs, and repro 39 lincoln drums, and it looks like the hub still needs to come out 1/4" to locate in the drum center. Their bearing spacer just reduces the spindle stub length to 39-48 hub bearing spacing. If I get it figured out today, I'll post the fix.
If the drum is too far in, it sounds like you have a semi-easy fix available = spacers! Either behind the bearing if there is room, or between the hub and drum. Which hub are you using? The 40-style hubs originally ran the drum outside, and the 48-style ran the drum inside. But a guy could run the drum on the outside of a 48 hub if the offset was correct for his application (might take a bit of t******* on the outer edge of the hub) Another option is to use a hub from an F-1 or F-100. Not sure what the offset is on those, but maybe they space the drum the correct direction?
Not to steal 31modelo's thread; maybe the input will be of use. As for me, hubs are for outside drums, so the either the hub needs to come out the thickness of the drum face (+spacer), or remove that amount from the rear lip of the drum.
I have options as far as spindles I have sets of both (square & round back) spindles and I also have options for hubs I have 4o hubs and F1. I have F2 backing plates for all 4 corners and would like to switch to the Lincoln drums if they will work. otherwise find someone to do some trading with.
I used f-2 backing plates with '49 Lincoln rear drums. Some of the 49-54 Lincoln's had 12 inch brakes. Bolted right up using f-1 hubs. The center hole in the drum is the same size as the f-1...
don't you just love these well they just bolt on. and iam not doubting nostalgia59 but one little wrinkle changes every thing alchemy and bruce Lancaster are wealth of knowledge on this old stuff
So use the 49 rear Lincoln 12in brakes on the front? How about the rear? Yeah I always expect a little finesse
I seem to remember this issue on something I had built in the past . My repair was to chuck the drum in a lathe and cut needed amount from rear of the drum ( od nearest to backing plate ) . You need to take measurements to be sure this will not cause contact with the shoes , if you have room easy fix . I have done this but can't remember on what : best I can recall it was on the space shuttle landing gear
After a couple of mockups, my problem with the Wilson Welding drum hitting the F250 backing plate was solved with 1/8" spacer between the '40 hub and drum. The WW drum has a big chamfer on the backside of the center hole, so there isn't a way to center it on the hub. Probably just adjust up the brake to center things up, then tighten the wheel. At least it was sumpin' simple.
