http://mirc.sc.edu/islandora/object/usc:29233 This is 17 minutes of footage from a race at a track in Woodbridge, NJ taken in 1929. The motorcycle stunt rider is my friend's father, Vigil DeMario Sr. . I knew Virge very well . He was a local legend around my hometown of Clifton, NJ. I, currently, have his '29 Indian 101 Scout in my garage . The film cuts out at one point , but then resumes. Lots of cool, old race cars. Enjoy....
that was really neat, all the spectators had suits on ...different era indeed. Looks like they have the Poverty Flats car working well.
Big balls man, daredevils all. Those cars weren't slow and none of em looked like they had ultimate handling characteristics, but hot damn are they kool or what...!
I would gladly post a picture of the Scout, but ever since they changed this site, for some reason, I can't post any pics. I know it's something on my end, but not sure what I am doing wrong.
THANK YOU! Love seeing East Coast racing footage. Many of those cars were outdated Millers that most likely ran Indy at some time, and were running along side Fronty powered Model T's. I'll dig out some photos of some cars that ran in New Jersey in that time period. Bob
I'm posting these photo's of the 1929 Indian 101 Scout for Bob,,cool piece of history. This is the information bob sent with the photo's.HRP This is The Indian owned by Virge DiMario, the stunt rider in the film I posted. I am not certain this is the bike in the film, but it could be. I will try to confirm that with his son, as Verge has p***ed on. Verge owned this particular bike for as long as I know , and knew him since I was a little kid (I’m 70 now). When I got this bike to my garage it had a primed tank and fenders. I painted it with my best attempt at aging the paint to match the rest of the bike. This bike is now owned by Virge’s son, Virgil DiMario Jr. Thanks again, Bob
Here is another video of Woodbridge Speedway. I grew up in Woodbridge and graduated from Woodbridge High, built on the site of the track.
http://mirc.sc.edu/islandora/object/usc:29233 Had to bring this back. This video is just too cool and the Indian Scout is well, no words for that bike except for I love to own it.
No seat belts, no roll bars, no crash protections and rolling that fast on oiled uneven wood boards. Man those guys had balls back then. I also had no idea how nice the race cars of that era sounded until today. Thank you!
Crazy Times...Raw, Dirty, Noisy...Perfect. I am amazed at the Buck and Snort car everyone literally standing right beside it with the randomness of its moves. I had an old Harley and stood on the seat for a bit but that was pretty much my acrobatics...these guys were much more accomplished at their craft. Indian Larry comes to my mind. Quite the early iron spectacle...
