I put a 40 Ford steering column in my 33 roadster to take advantage of the column shifter. The conversion went well, but I like the 39 Ford Banjo wheel and it doesn't match the hub O.D. of the column. I have seen some spacers made but I can't find any information on the net or the HAMB. Does anyone know how you would adapt the wheel to the column and make it look good? Maybe someone has done this and could help out. Any leads appreciated.
The coller is pressed on a 40 column,,the shaft must be removed and you can knock it off with a long metal rod and a few hard blows,,,then you will need to find a coller froma smaller shaft and press it on,,, Thats how I installed a 40 wheel on a 37 column. HRP
...then make a steel loop of some sort to hold upper pivot of the shifter. I think some kind of strap combined with a groove ground into the new upper shell would do it. From your side view, I think a transitional ring could be made to fill in between '40 top and the '29 wheel. You'd need to find someone with a lathe and a slab of aluminum or plastic of suitable size...a good crazy person could make this on a drill press.
Thanks, I think I will have an adapter made out of aluminum to fill the gap. If that doesn't work I will install a 40 wheel.
I'm trying to put a 36 banjo on a 40-46 truck column. My question is the collar that is inside the bell separate? I need to take 7/16 off the collar then the wheel should wedge on the shaft and hold the bushing in the column where it should. Also the space that is in Pewsplace first picture should be about 1/16. I know this is a old thread but everyone always says search and this is the best I found, thanks for any help.
I did this a long time ago, but as I recall I ended up taking about 1/8" off the bottom of the 39 Banjo wheel which eliminated the gap. The wheel fits right on the 40 shaft with no modification. I am not sure what collar you are talking about. I made a Delrin bushing to fit in the top section and the bottom section of the steering column and didn't use any collar. Can't upload now, will try later.
Here is the 40 column I used and I inserted a new bushing to keep the shaft tight. I did not cut down the center as you pointed out in your non-shifter column. A very similar situation to your set-up. The large gap I didn't like. I switched to an F-100 column for the automatic shifter and added this spacer. I still didn't like the gap so I cut the bottom of the 39 Banjo down so the gap was hardly noticeable.
Going to try dremel with a cut off wheel tom, to many beers tonight thinkin about it. I'll surely screw something up
I used some left over exhaust tubing and tapped the inside edge to get a little taper, then cut it off and JB welded it to the cone and sanded it down, a little filler and it looked good. It does not have to be strong, its just cosmetic. I think it was a header collector I used, been awhile and sold the car so I am going by memory
I used my belt sander to remove the required material to reduce the gap for the installation. The gap has been reduced to where it is hardly noticeable, especially when painted black or dark color. In my roadster I had the same problem with the gap. Not rocket science but it worked really well.
Well I attacked with the dremel and zip wheel, took off 7/16 and the wheel fits good. A little adjustment on the column centering the shaft in the tube and good to go I'm happy. By the way I used these 3 trouble lights LOL
The car is in TN now but I do have this photo showing the small gap which I filled with a spacer painted black.
