i aquired a 71 dodge truck's 360 to replace the busted stock engine in my 37 plymouth. i'm trying to figure out how this is all going to work since i've never done a mod swap before, but this is what i want long-term... i just need to be budget-minded to get a driver, then mod later to more desirable options for a decent street machine. i have the 360 with stock 2bbl cast iron intake with no carb, no exhaust manifold. an edelbrock streetmaster 318 intake, two New Process 435 4-speed ******s, and a 8-3/4" challenger rear end were part of the deal as well. i have a freshly rebuilt 78-79 GM quadrajet, a 73 carter GM quadrajet, and a holley 1850-2 in my current 4bbl carb ****nal. i understand this is not an overnight project and that my current stock list isn't necessary my final setup option... but, being budget-minded, i'd like to use as much of what i already have first. i can always upgrade later (i don't have a problem with this car "never" being 100% done, but i do want to drive it). short-term, i'm considering a replacement stock engine i can simply drop in so i can drive it in the meanwhile. i guess my question now is whether or not any of these parts are completely out of the question... namely the freshly rebuilt GM quadrajet. i know the intake is not the best out there for my preference, but it's what i have until i can upgrade. i'd like to get a t5 ****** eventually, and a mustang II front end. and some decent shorty headers. also, if anyone has put a small block mopar into a 30's dodge/plymouth, i would love to see pictures and descriptions of the parts and process. web links to your project are even better. thank you!
Seems to me the cheap way to go would be to put a 2-bbl on it, a core carb and rebuild kit should be inexpensive, then once you have it running and going, go back and change it over to a 4bbl. Usually you can't give away 2bbl carbs, a good core shouldn't set you back more than $20.
Where the 360 is a truck engine it has the rear sump set up you need. I take it is a rebuildable core @ this point? The flat 6 is unchanged through '59, I believe, but I imagine it wouldn't be cheap or easy to find a good running replacement for sale. If the 360 isn't running it would probably a lot faster/cheaper to find a 70s-80s Dodge truck (or where you already have the pan, oil pump pick up tube, dip stick & dip stick tube, a car engine) with a running 318 & swap it in, install the E body axle, the ****** & get the driveshaft done. Then you can rebuild the 360 @ your own pace & drop it in later.
I can tell you a 440 will fit in one this was about 1988. The car had an Impala front clip when I got it. It was too wide and the tires hit the fenders. Daily driver for 14 years. Miss that car.
PM me, if you're interested; I have a running 241.5 flat-head 6 from the 40 Chrysler shown in my avatar. Complete with peripherals + 3 speed. Got a vid of it running before removal. gatz
Here you go, I believe you have to mount it towards the p***enger side a bit to clear the steering gear. I'm putting a 318 Poly in the '33. I'm pretty much doing the same as George with the axle and drive shaft. I would update the shocks all around and add some new brakes up front while your at it. http://www.butchscoolstuff.com/33-38-ply-dod-chrys-eng-trans-conversion-2185cp/ My 30's Mopar parts list http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/...me-mopar-parts-together.925796/#post-10660803
Sounds like the easiest way to get it to be a DD is to hook up with gatz. The only question there is whether or not you have room to move the radiator 2" forward. I would also say steer clear of the T5 for the 360, a bellhousing will be expensive. Use an OEM AX15...cheaper and stronger than the t5. Plenty of info here if you search. .
