I'm just asking a question. I've looked and couldn't find out the answer. All this crap confuses me and I'm hoping someone here had an answer and I've found a few leads. So thank you to everyone who is trying to help.

I just took my alliance plaque down to DMV, the lady said, "What's THIS?"
I turned and fled...Hope she didn't call Ryan!

I used Broadway title company around 10 years ago, and it went like butter. No issues at all. Since then, the price went up pretty good, but what I understand, they're still at it. I did a check to see if the car was registered anywhere beforehand , of course. The car did have a Vin stamped on it, BTW . I'd certainly give it a try again.

Blacktop, check out the transferable NY registration it contains the serial number used to register the automobile. Take this document to your DMV and register your car. Disregard all the HAMBster bad information. Ron

I still think you are sweating this for no reason. Don't give 900 bucks away. I'm from NY. That old regi is the title. Bring that and bill of sale to DMV and you are good. Make sure the "seller" signs the back of the registration.

I had to get one for my Plymouth here in Maryland-Download a Writ Of Mandamus (one used for this purpose)change the info to what you have(you are the Plaintiff vs Director of MVA) take to court house and I believe they then give you paperwork to take to the MVA as in a Subpoena.Basically you are asking them to recognize you as the rightful owner of the car took me about 2-3 months and about 125 bucks.Same thing as when you get a divorce the state recognizes it thru the Writ Of Mandamus

Look for a good WOM doesn't matter if motorcycle car or truck then go thru it making it apply to your situation like they may have said title paperwork was lost in a fire on blah blah blah give dates too

VIN is Missing due to wear and tear on frame or use engine number as vin a stick to title being destroyed
I affirm that I am the rightful owner of this car
if you can include a bill of sale its more or less a slam dunk

    Good Luck
I now only buy em with titles in hand but if the price was right I would go thru this again
mine had to do with an estate sale and two dealers who never took title of car and the people I bought it from so technically I the second owner of vehicle.
So I actually have orig.title deemed invalid by my MVA and I received a valid Maryland title after doing WOM.Don't ask its a long story but I ended up talking to the granddaughter of the Original owner who was a LADY ..... she put blocks on the pedals cause she was too short to reach the pedals HAHA

So, OP how's it going? I see you can e-mail questions to the Indiana DMV, so that is a place to start. I think the title companies are pretty much on the run these days. Hope it's not too late for you, but NEVER start work on a car until you have a title for the project-insurance,too. The HAMB archives are full of dudes sinking major work and money into a car they can't figure out how to title. Hope you had luck.

I'm always amazed at the bizarre methods suggested in these threads, and the fact that most, and in this case none, of the respondents are even from the same state as the OP! I read them, but mostly for amusement.
WTF?? What works in one state may get your ass put in jail in another! Different states have different laws on this than others and getting off on the wrong foot may get you in a bind, and impede the process, or it literally could result in legal charges against you.
Here in my home state of GA there is no such thing as a title on any car older than 1962 and sold new in GA. I bought a '40 Ford in Ohio and got an Ohio title with it along with a bill of sale from the owner Got back home, went to tag office and all they wanted was the bill of sale, told them I also had a title in the previous owner's name and signed over to me and they didn't even want to see it. Also in GA there is a procedure to get an assigned number from the state when you don't have an ID plate on the car from OEM.
Point of all this is ask around with hot rodders and old car buffs IN INDIANA about this to make sure you start out right when you go to tag office. Then wait till a slow day at the tag office to calmly and clearly state your problem and the proposed solution. Just try not to get that cute young thing that has obviously just started on the job. If you can penetrate the grumpy veneer of a veteran in that office, one who's been there long enough to know the score, you'll be far better off.

We are just waiting on the title to come from Indy. Everything is good. All they wanted was a receipt and a unopened returned letter saying we tried getting a hold of the original owner.

So things are good! Thanks everyone.

True on every account-read for entertainment, talk to people in your state, deal with veterans at the DMV/BMV

Good to hear things are moving well. Sending a letter to the previous owner and having it returned is a new one-but whatever.

I'll add a twist. At least here in PA, the best thing to do is to have your state representative handle delivering your stuff to the DMV. Far less hassles that way and any that are created are more easily solved. When I transferred my A title from Ohio to passenger PA to Street Rod PA , the state first vacated both the Ohio and regular passenger titles-and VINs, then sent me a new Street Rod title and a NEW VIN. That was a bit confusing to say the least, and my state rep really helped.

Again, don't put time and money into a car UNTIL you have the clear title.

I have used NY registration from the 50s in Indiana to get a title. They considered it a bill of sale and issued a new title. I had no problem at all, I guess it depends who you get at the bmv. They even gave me back the NY registration.
