Technical 40 side shift trans in 32 roadster help

Discussion in 'Traditional Hot Rods' started by paintslinger805, Feb 16, 2016.

  1. Can anyone tell me what they had to do to fit a 40 side shift trans into a 32 k member with the original pedal ***embly. Seems like the rear shift lever hits the pedal bracket. Did they just trim to fit am I missing something. Help help I'm drowning in 32 roadster. Maybe some pictures

I've got an old "how to hot rod your Ford" type book (Clymers?) that shows the process fitting a sideshift into a '32. They say to narrow the pedal box through the middle an inch, then shave a bit off the side of each pedal's boss, enough to fit into the now-narrowed box.

  4. Before you get into that much work on the pedals get your shift quadrent on and plan your route for the shift rods. I started to do that on my Roadster with a complete 40 column and with everything involved I decided it wasn't worth it. Literally every part involved needed some kind of modification. I didn't want to play that game. Not that I couldn't do it, it just wasn't the program I had in mind.

I had a narrowed pedal box set of pedals and a 40 column that was said to have been out of the same 32
the stuff was all painted the same bright red color so im sure it was
the pedal box was narrowed around an inch
and the two pedal pivot bosses were narrowed 1/2" each, looked pretty slick
damn things are lost in my barn right now, if I ever find them Ill try to post a picture
the shift levers on the column were stock length
never saw the trans .someone else got ahold of that

  6. It something I got to do I'm recreating my grandpas car he ran at el mirage in 47-48-49. In this picture you can see the shift knob. He is 86 and he remembers he put a 40 trans in but not all the little details. He says it was a lot nicer and more room on the floor. I'm recreating it as exactly his as I can. Thanks for all the help

The book was a large-size Petersen or Trend (whichever one it was at that time) HRM book "How to Build a Hotrod" from somewhere around 1960. It showed a picture or two of a narrowed '32 box...but there's better out there. That pic came from a Car Craft small book article on installing column shift. I bet someone here can find that in 5 minutes...
Whatever you learn, a lot will be cut and try...moving the shift box up, down, and around the column (including trying it on the bottom), finding the routes for the rods past the cylinder head, etc.
'32 will be significantly easier than Model A.

Not trying to be frustrating, but have you considered a 39 floor shift?

Hot Rod Mag Dec 1949 by Fran Hernandes column shift installation in his 32 3w how to with detail photos. I think this is what you looking for. Mike.

  11. I'm recreating my grandpas car and he installed a 40 trans and column so I'm doing ever thing to his exact car. Plus it was the thing to do back then if you ask him. He's 86 right now so the little details of how he made it fit he can't remember. He just remembers how much nicer it was plus he says it was easier to get three people in the car. Got to remember he was 17 so kids were a lot smaller in 1947.

  12. Hey bushwacker do you have that mag issue if so can you post the pages ? Thanks for the tip I found that issue online and will buy it if nobody has it to post.

  13. That's why the 39 trans is ever popular.
I hear the 40 innards will work in a 39 case.

You really modify every part of the pedal ***embly. I got a set of 47 pedals and modified them. I made a new pedal box that was over for clearance. It bolts in with the same holes. The pedal bosses were not narrowed. I spent a bunch of time with the pedal arms. You would have to do the same with the moved 32 arms. I used the late clutch linkage and it works fine.

  15. anybody got any picturesssssssssssssssssssssssssss???????? i have a mint set of 32 pedals and also a really nice pair of 40s maybe i th9inking to not cut up the 32s and make my own out of the 40 set. going to one day recreate my grandpas 32 3 window so these 32 pedals might be worth not cutting up. herers his 3 window dont steal my picture or my dream... misc cars 003 4x6.jpg

I've got a 32 with side shift. May take a bit but I'll check what's going on and let you know.

Its incredibly tight in a 32, even in a 33-4 it involves a lot of reworking of every part of the mechanism and the pedals to get it to operate correctly. I did a 33 coupe like this last year, and had 30 hours in it to be happy with the operation of it all, although it was Right hand drive , which makes it even tighter!!

I took some pics of old pics in my photo album. You can see the new pedal box and modified 47 arms. The pedal box has an extension to hold the ball for the 47 clutch cross shaft. The trans is a 57 Chevy with adapters to the 241 hemi. It all bolts in with no mods to the frame.

  20. Yes he did I think he told me payed 20 or 25 bucks for the car then put the parts on it he liked. He traded the 3 window for the roadster so he could join the Pasadena roadster club and go racing at the dry lakes. I have all his timing tags and original club plaque. I'm going to email him tonight with pictures to see if he can remember how he installed the trans and what he had to do to the pedals. He's 86 so there's a lot he remembers and a lot he don't. Maybe the pictures with help him. maybe I will post his reply here's my pedals.
