It must be wonderful to be so omniscient that you can accurately judge the timing and sequence of events from just a photo taken after the fire was well underway. How you know exactly what the driver did and did not do. And, what company policy may have directed him to do in such an event: (Para 1., Whenever possible, make an attempt to limit the damage to the transporter).

Really remarkable talent you have there.

Sorry for your loss. That was a nice truck.

"A**** the cars damaged in a vehicle cargo fire on I-65 north near the Saturn Parkway interchange on Monday afternoon were a 1957 Corvette, an antique pickup truck and an unknown model-year Porsche."

  4. Wow Brian,
Very sorry to hear this. I hope it was not damaged too badly & wish you all the best getting a proper resolution!

Brian, very sorry for your angst and possible loss of your truck. No matter what the cargo they were undoubtedly someones pride and job and losing a possession in such a manner is troubling. Very sorry for all of their losses.

Hopefully the transport company and insurance company(s) will look after everyone. It was not so long ago that a open auto hauler transport full of Porsche cars got high sided on a level crossing and was hit by a train. Total loss of all vehicles and while not "Hamb" friendly the loss is no less devastating.

I' ve seen this type of tire fire several times in my career.
Driver has a "underinflated" tire run to the point of ignition from overheating. The air blowing past the tire at speed kept the flames beaten down, until he stopped. Then, WHOOSH, instant inferno. Had one (on a car hauler!) do this right at the corner of the shop. Lucky the FD was a couple of minutes away. Quite the mess!

Why don't car haulers have a fire extinguishing system on board? We had one in our enclosed trailer. A few CO2 tanks and some piping. They have tire pressure monitoring systems available too. With cargo that expensive, I'm surprised insurance companies don't require it.

^^^ Yes. UPS rigs had an extinguisher on each side of the cab .... as well as an extinguisher on each side of the front corner of the trailers. 4 per haul. ^^^ That's what I was thinking ... in more of a W.T.F. ( !!!!!! ) kind of ramble .....

  10. I carry one in each of my trucks! I have been blessed not to have used them on my own trucks & trailers, but have used them several times to help other people.

Once a tire or two gets going they are difficult if not impossible to extinguish. This is why huge piles of worn tires in JY are troublesome, if they catch there's nothing that can be done.

Sorry for your loss, that has got to be the worst especially after a resto. Hopefully the truck is not a total loss. If it is a total loss there is a really nice C20 in the f/s section in Cali.

Trucks are required to carry fire extinguishers but they are usually dry chemical to fight any type of fire. A CO2 system with manual or automatic triggering works in an enclosed trailer by eliminating oxygen in the trailer and cooling everything down. It buys time for firefighters to get there.

All I can say is that I hope everything works out for you and the others involved in that mess.
I have had a little experience with these haulers. Unfortunately I was not impressed with the care and handling the drivers gave to the vehicles being transported.
It prompted me to by a trailer and a truck for my own use.
    Best of Luck!

Holey ****! When I wrote my own transport story Thursday evening Shipping Cars is a Gamble. I had no idea this happened. It's sad but as a trucker for a large company doing our own transporting from plant to plant I've seen many tire fires. As mentioned most start as a set of brakes hangs up or a tire gets low or flat. There can be other things that over heat a brake and tire. Keep in mind there are 18 of those or more and the duals are close together. Once they start burning it's not easy putting it out.
One time I blew an inside rear dual and didn't know it. I was lucky to see black smoke and stop in time to use the fire extinguisher to put it out. If you've never driven an 18 wheeler don't be telling others how you'd feel a brake hanging up, a flat tire, or a dead deer between the duals. These things don't always show up immediately.
I'd say this fire was burning for some time and when the driver slowed in traffic it got out of control. Of course the driver unhooked the cab. Wouldn't anyone pulling even a small RV unhook it if the thing was burning?
This also shows no matter who you hire or what type of trailer **** happens. I wanted to have my cars transported in a closed trailer. Everything added costs more and soon it's not worth the cost. We chose a nice warm dry weekend to have four cars moved 1033 miles. Sadly only one made it clean and dry.
Also keep in mind these transporters are on schedules and your car is not the only one in the world to be shipped someplace else. As my ***le says shipping cars is a gamble no matter who you hire.

because I have seen many trailer fires and it could have easily been put out if caught in time. I t is clearly in the day time and he should have seen the smoke coming out of there and it is on the drivers side too. The tractor is required to carry a small fire extinguisher that is there just in case of an occasion like this. I would think since they are hauling valuable items that may have gas in them, they may have larger and better fire extinguishers just to be safe. this just didn't jump up and explode and burst into flames, it smoked and there was a lot of notice

sorry for your loss Bryan. That was a nice looking truck.

we sold a rig for $200,000 that went overseas and hired a trucker to deliver it from Wi. to N.J port. he was a private trucker and not a broker or a big name shipping co. with many trucks. when he showed up and loaded it onto his trailer he said that we can drop the insurance now. once it was on his trailer even though it was parked in our yard his insurance fully took over. We played it safe though and left it on for 2 extra days until we heard it was loaded on the ship.

he was half the price of any big name shippers that was capable of carrying that size and weight of rig. but he did give us a big break because he was heading to that same port originally empty to bring a combine back to Wi. we got lucky on the timing
