1952-59 Ford Anyone ever recess a 52-54 license plate?

Thinking of recessing the rear license plate on my car. Have not gotten into the body yet so not sure about it.
Searched online and did not see any like this. Even searched Mercurys.
I know that the fuel neck is an issue, but my trunk floor is being replaced with a 71-73 Mustang floor and tank. (I want a larger tank is why). There would be a trunk latch issue, but that's easy I believe.
Is there a reason, possibly structurally, that I am not seeing this done?
The way I am seeing it, it is just metal.

I saw one done on a '53 but I personally wasn't impressed with it. It could probably be done so it would flow better with the body. I'll see if I can find pics of it.

Yes, interested to see how it looks before cutting into it. Would hate to do and not like it

I couldn't find the pic I was thinking of but both of the ones leadsledjim posted are far better. I'm a fan of that flush look too!

I recessed mine. It's not finished but you'll get the idea.

I did it because I saw this picture of a Ford and really liked it.

So I tried it out with my '54. I focused on keeping the angle of the plate as close as possible to the angle of the rear fenders under the taillights. I saw lots of pictures of recessed boxes with square corners but made mine round on top because there aren't any other straight lines on these cars. I didn't do the bottom because the whole thing is hidden by the bumper anyway. I also made the bottom lip mostly flat with a bit of a tilt down toward the bumper because I didn't want water to be able to pool in there and I didn't want to cut or drill drain holes (mostly because they would just drain right into the trunk).

I know it's a love-it-or-hate-it kind of thing but I'm pretty happy with it. I don't need the gas filler and I always hated the license plate bracket anyway.

I guess if you look over at my avatar pic you can see the before and after. Just noticed that.

Really like your inspiration, even that color combo is my current plan. Your construction looks great, you may have inspired another. What will you do about the gas filler?

Thanks. I have the same '70s Mustang gas tank that was mentioned earlier, so I'll have a filler in the trunk. I plan on doing something like what the '54 on Overhaulin' ended up with.

Sorry, I skipped right over the "and tank" twice!
    Thanks!
