trying to decide what 4 barrel to use on my 292- it's bone stock so don't need anything big. The Holley 8007 390 cfm unit is what was recommended on their sight. Looks like the small Edelbrock is 500 cfm; is that too much? any suggestions?

The Edelbrock is 500 cfm, roughly 30 cfm bigger than the original teapots, but the secondaries are vacuum operated and will only open as much as the engine wants. The 390 is a good carb, but the Edelbrock is easier to tune and gives great gas mileage. I get in the low twenties at interstate speeds in a '55 Merc which is no lightweight.

    Bondo:
The Holley 390 or 450 would be easier to adapt to the "B" intake manifold. You would probably need just a spacer so the ****erflys would clear the manifold bores.
The Edelbrock 500 will certainly work, but requires an adapter to match the manifold. If you have an automatic transmission the Holley would be my choice as the kickdown linkage is easier to adapt. The Edelbrock is very wide and occupies the same real estate as the kickdown bellcrank.
This ***umes the 292 is in the Galaxie in your avatar.

Well, we are unsure of the intake he has. I would by far go with the 500 though.

The autolite 4100 found in early ford 289s is what am considering for my 292

Brodie- the Fairlane in my avatar isn't mine, but the 292 IS going in my 59 Fairlane. the original mill was locked up tight so I acquired another 292 from a 57; it came with a factory 4 barrel intake which I'm planning on using (also have a 2 barrel at my disposal).

Jimmy2car- plan on using the factory distributor that's in my locked up engine (or one like it). not really trying to build a performance engine, just want a good reliable driver for now.

Zapato- not familiar with the autolite; gonna do a little research on that- but simple is definitely for me!

I think the reason some asked about the dist., is because if it isn't a 57 or newer, you would want to switch to that style.because the 55/56 are different animals all together.

If the 57 292 has the distributor in it use it. The pre 57 dizzys are vacuum advance only. The later dizzy will be much more user friendly with a newer model carb.

I have the original 4 barrel carb off of the 292 out of my '56 wagon, it was a 3 speed manual car. It's in loose hands if interested.

Stick with the Holley or the Autolite.

    I'll second Brodie's opinion.
My 56 had an Edlebrock on it and the previous owner had to
hack up the linkage pretty badly to make it work.

When Edelbrock bought the rights to Carter's Compe***ion Series they went to the "universal" GM style linkage and made bolt on funky adapters for Ford and Mopar. This is the Carter with Ford C4/C6 kickdown linkage, I have rebuilt and sold several of these they use the same kits as the Edelbrock Performer http://www.ebay.com/itm/Carter-AFB-...ash=item2eec491f94:g:EWoAAOSwWTRWy2kK&vxp=mtr A lot of the old time Carb guys feel the quality is better with these.

Jeff- I see this is correct for the year of engine (it's a 57); will it work with the fordomatic linkage in my 59 that I'm putting it in? I ***ume it was probably the same from 57 - 59 but want to make sure b4 bidding. It's right in my price range.

Should be about the easiest to hook up,if you have the CD-ROM Parts Manual from Dan there should be a good illustration showing the linkage to compare with.

  21. I've always been a Holley or Rochester guy, but recently have been using Quick Fuel Technologies carburetors due to their basic Holley design, but have superior tuning features over the Holleys. The parts are interchangeable with Holley, so that's a plus.

They have a Slayer Series in 450cfm for around $300 that would be great for a stock 292. Just earlier today I ordered a QFT Slayer 600cfm from Jegs for the 302 in my '54 Ford.

I've never been a fan of Carter or Edelbrock carburetors. I have friends that swear by them, but those friends couldn't tune a carburetor if their lives depended on it.
