Guys, I'm going to try to do a basic wiring job on a SBC that will be on a stand. Recommendations for what gauge wires to use? and if anybody has a basic diagram of an old time setup with old distributer/coil , etc. that would be greatly appreciated.

Do you want a wiring diagram or the sizes(gauge) of the wires?

#14 should be fine for ignition and starter solenoid wiring.

Just make sure that the stand is sturdy and well supported, or you will be in for a hell of a surprise.

Except for B+ to B terminal on starter, and the start solenoid may be an I instead of R to coil.
    Nice simple picture.

Bonzo-1, Squirrel's diagram (thanks, squirrel) will be greatly helpful. As far as wire size, do you think #14 will work for all connections?

  8. 14 guage wire should work fine for all those connections, then a good sized positive from battery positive to the starter lug as well as good ground strap to the run stand and a good negative battery cable to the negative battery post.

The only exception on the wire size, is for the battery cables that connect the battery to the engine block and the starter solenoid. They need to be quite a bit thicker, #4 or bigger.

I don't think that diagram is quite right. Shouldn't there also be a heavy cable from the + terminal on the battery to the large lug on the starter solenoid?
