Event Coverage IDIOTS RUNNING CAR SHOWS!

Take a look at this photo from a couple of years ago. There is an annual car show in Southwest Missouri (who shall remain nameless). It is not that I wouldn't be glad to out them as idiots but to be honest the name changes so much I have no idea what they call it now! LOL! Anyway a friend sent me this photo from their Facebook page using our cars as a promo shot for the upcoming event!


That is Dad in his now crashed RPU and my Pulp Friction Model "A" rolling into the show two years ago. They have used this photo in a couple of publications as well and to be honest it is a bit flattering. But here is the crux (as they say). After we parked and went to register that morning, we found they had no class for us. No Hot Rod class with any year reference, not even a street rod class. The only choices we had were Street Machine (which was anything modified with wheels) and or Rat Rod. Dad relinquished and put the RPU with the Rat Rods but I absolutely refused. I gave them my registration fee because it was for a really good cause but did not register. I just parked in the show and enjoyed the day. By the way, Dad lost that day in the Rat Rod category to an absolutely spotless (Boyd Cottington-esk) easily 6 figure '34 Ford.

It seems like every idiot and their brother has jumped on the bandwagon with a "cause" and car show or cruise! Most of them wouldn't know a good hot rod or custom if it ran them over on the freeway!

 

If you are going to win a trophy you are there for the wrong reasons

Exactly...That is the only reason we go. I am sorry, the way I wrote that is a bit misleading. We register because that is what you do at a car show. We could care less about trophies. But when you show up at a car show that does not even recognize the main class of cars that most car shows are based upon, it makes you scratch your head. There were 8 classes for Corvettes and only 5 Vettes on the property. My point was they had absolutely no concept how to set up a car show and that is sad.

My point about Dad losing was simply to laugh at a Rat Rod class being won by an absolutely perfect street rod. By the way, the guys that were really upset about not winning anything were the real RAT RODS that were! LOL!

 

Who cares what 'labels' they want to put on things, pick one and park it. Odds are if there they are putting six figure cars in a 'rat rod' class, it's really not a rat rod class. You came to show your car and have fun.

 

If a show doesn't even recognize your build style; "vote with your feet".
Or do what others have done; start your own competing ("no trophies") show/get together on the same day for Rods and Customs only.

 

last year I went to a small show in a small town...run by the chamber of commerce. One of their "judges" figured he owned all the cars, I guess, he was making himself pretty comfortable opening things up, climbing inside, etc. I let him know that's not really appropriate behavior, and some car owners might get pissed.

 

As stated above, its the ride to the show and maybe seeing some old friends. Every thing else is a bonus or a good laugh.

Sometimes it's fun to ride to the show, park in the spectator area and walk into the show. It kinda messes with the promoters head (and wallet since more often than not, spectators are free). Seems ridiculous at times that promoters charge the car owners $20 for the privilege of getting their vehicles judged by some stroker that hasn't a clue.

 

I refuse to take my car(s) to local "shows". I build 'drivers', not looking to go somewhere and park it, I can do that in my garage. If people want to look, they are welcome to stop by and gawk.

 

Altereds can be fun too y'know.

 

I rarely do a local car shows, I can't see paying to see my car or setting in the same spot all day. More fun cruising with the grand kids or going to a large event that has a swap meet and cars I've never seen before. You and your dad plan some road trips together , take a lot of pictures and post them here for us. Car shows are BOREING but hay that's just me. Cruising with Dad is Priceless Thanks RON...

 

I could care less about trophy's or plaques. If I would happen to win one that's frosting on the cake, but that's not what I'm there for. To me it's all about rest and relaxation and enjoying all the other show cars. There are a lot of show organizers out there that don't have a clue as to what is going on. But don't let that stop you from having a good time. With so many shows every weekend you can pick and choose where you want to go.

 

We were hanging out during an awards ceremony once because we thought a friends car had a good chance of best in show. I about laughed my**** off when they called first place for the Import category. It was a killer AC Cobra Kit car. Now that is guy after a worthless trophy. He said his car was based on the Ace Bristol which officially made it an import!

 

many shows are run by people that have next to no concept on what is involved putting on a show. some are civic groups that try to raise funds for a worthwhile cause. as a participant that has been involved in putting on car shows it can be frustrating, to say the least. just deal with it as it is, get involved to try to help change things , or just don't attend. you can still make a donation toward the declared cause they are helping. most people have no contact with rides that are part of the H.A.M.B. world. an example is a new reality TV show with a well known car builder & musician. instead of focusing on the overall build they were more excited with chopping shopping carts to put into bed of a somewhat late model truck/car ride. many times at shows where there is a voting process for a people's choice award the winner is some over the top vehicle that most of us never would even consider owning. don't like the station? change the channel.

 

Now that's funny! But I am afraid Altered or Traditional, for me there stills need to be a nice chassis!

 

I enter car shows to get the good parking spot and a place to sit and rest, eat, and*********. No shame in my game.

As far as using your image for a show promotion,when you sign up at the table to enter you give them permission to use any and all pictures and likeness for further use as they see fit.The same thing as a winner on a radio program,they can use your voice for further commercials and promos.They maynot be obligated to tell you that but it would also be nice if you were asked.

I don't care about the image use. It just makes me laugh that they would choose two cars to represent their show when they didn't even have a class for them. That was the point I was trying to make when I started, idiots running car shows! LOL

 

This how I see it. Mechanically my car blows most of the cars away, it just doesn't look as nice. And most of the yahoos (judges included) have NFI what they're looking at. Park in spectator, walk around for a while, scope out the babes and split.

 

There are always things to complain about, but here is another way to look at it. All the car shows regardless of who puts them on or how they're run, are good for the old car/hot rod hobby. I was asked by a guy who saw my '51 Merc to attend a show. It turned out to be a show at a doctors office. How's that for a connection? Anyway...long live old iron!

 

In that instance, how could you say no?

 

A car show for the "show" will be different than a car show for " a fund raiser"

For the "show" it's about the competition, the classes, the scoring and points all Highly unlikely at a fundraiser Because the fundraiser is about the cause not the cars.
