The last two or three shows I have went to I took my grill and a big cooler. I fed my friends Sausage and Pepper sammichs ,pulled pork ,Chili dogs . I had so much fun I might take my car to one someday.

  2. Why do they call it a "cruise night" when they just park the cars in a lot like a car show? Why do people beg for trophy's when they didn't even build the car? And half the time don't know anything about the car.

Interestingly, over here the car and driver are usually free, or gold coin donation, (so max $2) and the spectators pay a small entry fee.
I would guess that many "donate" a larger entry fee if it is for a good cause.

I might attend 1-2 car shows a year, and only go because my brother-in-law talks me into it. And there is no chance I will get a trophy with my low buck, work in progress Acadian. I get bored parking my car in a parking lot for 6 hours and hanging out.
But I do have the best time at our local swap meet, and parking my Acadian in the collector car parking area. Just show up and leave when you want. I attend with my son and brother, sort of a family thing. Lots of great cars to check out and a great swap meet. Run into lots of car guys I know and we talk about cars and stuff.
This is my "car show" that I look forward to every year!

I just posted a photo of the Marasco/Sharp RPU on Chris' full fendered thread a couple hours ago. Small world! And another PU I was really looking at around that time was just posted by you the other day, Bub Johnsons old truck.

To the OP, if only idiots are running the show, they probably need your help badly, help them figure out classes. Putting on car shows is a lot of work. You have little right to criticize if you have never been directly involved with putting a show on.

I attend shows when ever I can, I even pay an entry fee at a few of them. Most shows don't have a class for my car, I'm OK with that, just tell me where to park. I figure that if I win a trophy, they didn't have enough cars, my car sure isn't worthy of a trophy.

Most of the charity shows around here have gone to a top 25, or top 50 (or pick a number) and add a few extra, Best GM, Best Ford, Best Mopar, Best ????, and often some local celebrity's choice. The Best Of's are judged by a couple of people that like those cars, the celebrity choice is whichever ride they like, and the remainder is by participant choice and its a ballot count. The Best of Show, has a specific spot on the ballot, and is awarded to the vehicle with the highest ballot count.

I go to shows to benefit a charity, to enjoy the ride there and home, to enjoy the company of whom ever is joining me, for a resting place, a cooler stop, and just for a place to hang out and BS with like minded people. Gene

I like going to local cruise ins. They take a evening of time rather than an entire day. Get off work dust a car gather family. Eat dinner and BS. Then take a nice drive before bed. A weekend show takes all day. I like them but don't participate in most of them. Easier to sleep in stop for a look and take off. Depends on the event if my wife and I will commit to an all day adventure. It will be interesting to participate in the hill climb in Colorado this year. Different kind of event with running and driving cars rather than a parking lot of cars. I have spectated the last two years. The reliability run on Friday sounds like lots of fun. Got to get my car finished for that one!

... LOL... Bolt-ons are like a nice custom, pretty to look at, but some times you need the real thing, like a hot rod, to really put some miles on 'em and enjoy the ride...
    ... Right?

local car shows were invented to give locals trophies
kinda like the Academy Awards except without the goofy speeches

  15. I take the coupe to shows now and then, and do not go for or care about trophies . Most of the spectators and some of the participants dont know what to make of the coupe, or what it really is. I took her to six shows last summer, and won at all six shows. Why ? I dont know. Some shows are better then others, you just have to weed out the crappy ones, just like anything.

Don't go to a lot these days as a lot of event co-coordinators are not car people. It's only a commercial exercise for them to make a profit on the premise of providing entertainment. They charge a entry fee for those entering their cars as well as the spectators. Entrants get shafted, who cares about trophies. It's all about the socialising, talking to others and getting people interested in the hope they might jump on board; who knows they may want to become involved and build a car?

The OP actually has a good point with this. Almost as annoying as the "go fund me" pages because someone's pet died or they forgot to look their sh!t up and scumbag stole from them. Problem is, the money doesn't always go to the "good causes".

Most (I said most, not all) podunk small town car shows usually suck anyway. Last time I tried to go to a local "Back to the 50s" show (full of 60s and 70s muscle cars), I was allowed in by one person running the show, only to be turned away seconds later by some ignorant douche in a school bus yellow colored shirt that said "Event Staff" on it because he thought the car in my avatar was a "rat rod". I was more offended of the "R" word than I was not being let in.

Funny thing was, I parked in a adjacent parking lot and there were still plenty of people checking out the car.

    Obviously never went back.

This is what going to a car show is about for me

It was New Year's Day. It's a morning of images so that's how I'll write it. The plan is to take the car to Brooklands for the New Year's Day meet. New Year's Eve finished at 1am but coffee honey and toast and I'm out in the garage at 8.15.

The thermometer shows 2 degrees. Not so good in a roadster with no hood or heater but enough layers and ski gloves and I should be fine.

The morning is clear and blue but the sun's not up yet. The roads are empty and the exhaust echoes around the empty streets snarling up the hills and popping on the overrun into junctions. A Lotus seven pulls out in front of me and we convoy for a bit before he pulls away.

Passing Byfleet station there's a girl walking home in last nights party shoes. The air is cold and champagne crisp. I queue up at Brooklands between a Roadrunner and Morris minor. Couldn't hear my engine over the Roadrunner. Parked up on the banking. Talked to a couple of locals I'd met before but missed some other friends I knew were going.

Talked to some new friends for a couple of hours. Frogeye sprite and 68 twin cam escort owners were memorable. As ever the car draws attention, it's seriously rare and makes people smile. Always a good day when you make people smile.

I head off at about midday convoying with a TR5 and a couple of Austin Healeys until we go our separate ways. Had a Blues brothers moment on the way home buying whole cooked chickens and French bread for lunch.

A great morning. Must do it more often.

The only thing about car shows that REALLY bugs me is having to pay to be the entertainment. Who ever heard of a band paying the club to pay? Gary

My last girlfriend had a modified top end, she reminds me of my fiberglass bodied race car. Might not be real but she's a hell of a lot of fun to play with !

Well its been said already, but yes I enjoy the drive, most times we go to shows an other places as a CC an that adds to the drive running down the road with 3 to 8+ cool cars. No class?well if it bothers you ask them them nicely about that, often they just don't know better. Let them know the wording "rat rod" = "rat crap" or " rusty awfull trashy" IMO an is a inslut to real hotrods, they will often fix it,if not just enjoy looking around n BS with others, don't enter the a wrong class at all. I do miss doing the old indoor shows in the 50s n 60s that were often 3days ,were they know, but times have moved on.

If they have a peoples choice award I never vote for a car with whiskers on the tires.
