Technical Need a little help !

    Hello ,I am French and I am alone with my old Flathead ,
    please could you help me ?
    I ordered a gasket set to rebuilding it whom I tore to pieces in 1992!!!!!
    And I am starting the ***embly.
    however ,I count on your help.

    This is a rope right out the set with a seal retainer.

    What I think is that the shape of the rope don't fit with the retainer .
    Maybe it's OK ,it will fit when I will tightened the bearing caps .
    Or then, it does not need! I do not remember myself anymore if there was one in the dismantling!

    And finally, as it was chipped (in 2 places) I tried a re-filling (by welding) which I am not satisfied .

    So ,what I need to know is :
    - first ,there wasn't any rope on this model and I fit all with no rope .
    - second ,It needs one in every aluminium seal retainer and here I am bad because of my welds which risk to tear the rope .
    In this case, I think that a solution would be to mount my crankshft in a lathe to blow up the damaged part(on approximately 1.5 mm) but will that fit good with the rope ?


    I am very sorry for my poor language (thank you "reverso") but I wish you can understand what I ask for .

    First you need to smooth the crank out where you welded it. It will chew the seal to pieces.

    Next make sure that there is no surface rust on your crank journals, I know that you were going to do that right? If you have a lathe that is large enough to accept the crank maybe it wouldn't hurt to polish the journals.

    Let me crack a book open and see about your main seal. There are plenty of flathead guys here and I haven't had one apart in a while but if no one has an answer for you soon enough I will find it for you.

    That is a labyrinth type seal, no rope used in it. The area you welded is a slinger should be ok if it does not touch the housing.

    Yep no rope needed on the back end with the slinger type crank. Or, you could machine the fins off, trade the aluminum seal inserts for the 59AB type, and then use the rope seals.
