Technical Stuck exhaust manifold bolt - ideas to remove?

Got a SBC with stuck bolt. Tried PB Blaster, heated bolt with torch, solid tapping with ball peen hammer - no luck. Maybe I've got to keep trying these methods? Certainly don't want to twist it off! Any other methods I should try?

 

Heat bolt then hold a candle to it. The wax will be drawn in around the threads. Don't laugh! It works.

 

Go with what khead47 said.....it works as I got one out doing just that and had been working on it for a couple days with no luck. Done the wax treatment and out it came.

OK, guys, do I have this right? Manifold is still in place so only part of bolt visible is the head. Am I thinking correctly that I need to cut the manifold off for the candle trick to work?

 

What type of torch?

This type of manifold/bolt set up?

At this point I'd bring each bolt up to red heat for a minute or 2 with an oxyacetylene torch before trying to loosen it.

 

A 50\50 mixture of Acetone and ATF has the ability to penetrate better than any commercially available product. The acetone will evaporate rather quickly, so don't mix any more than needed. The smaller molecular structure of the mixture allows it to loosen stuck, frozen or corroded fasteners quite readily and the price is right. In extreme cases, I alternate heat and the 50/50 mixture. Never failed me yet.

 

Dan, I use oxyacetylene. A 2 B - may have to try your solution. I guess I will give the heat treatment a couple more tries first. Thanks, guys.

 

I have had the wax treatment work when all others failed.

 

My thinkin would be cut the head off the bolt remove the rest of the bolts and the manifold . Then attack the bolt where it is frozen at the head . Try penetrating oil of your choice first , soak it allow it to sit and work a bit . Rap the stuck bolt a few times with the hammer . It if still doesn't budge , the "Blue Wrench " is the last resort . Heat and slowly turn to remove then retighten , working back and forth until it's out . Just my take on it

 

If enough of the bolt is accessible I have used this trick successfully many times. I take a nut, slice it in half to make sure I get proper penetration (that's what she said) and MIG weld it to the stud. Jack up the heat and don't be shy. Red is the right color. Then pull out the air impact and back it out with small bursts. The combination of the heat and the use of the impact will do the trick. I have taken broken studs out, stripped heads, even water jacket hex plugs I thought would never come out.

 

just went threw this. first time and have worked on alot of sbc over the years.
the bolt is stuck in manifold and not the head.is it one of the center ones?
yes,I drilled one out+sawsall the other,than a small ez out took the remains out of head.

 

ATF/acetone, wax, heat the bolt up and give it a good bump with a hammer. Try them all. You still may end up with a couple broken off.

Do you have a welder, to weld a nut on if you do snap a couple?

 

I hope I don't have to try it, but I sure am glad you shared it.

 

Cut the head off with a whiz wheel, slide the manifold off, now you have a long stud to play with, tickle that bad boy with some heat and a pair of vice grips.... Wiggle it back and forth.... It'll break free.

 

I have used WD40 instead of wax I'll have to try wax next time. I'd remove the manifold weld a nut to the stud heat and wax or WD 40.
