Yes. On my 66 Ford F100, I scoured the Internet and found others who had done it. They used a 10 inch cheaply chrome air cleaner. I purchased one, switched out the cheapo air filter with a K &N. Cut the guts out of the original top with a air hacksaw and tin snips and placed the top over the chrome cleaner with a wood spacer to set the correct height . Fools everyone.
Why would you want to? Oil bath air cleaners are better and cheaper than paper. The only reason they went to paper was they are cheaper for the car companies (but more expensive for the customer). You can service one for a couple of bucks, it only needs to be done every 10000 miles or more. Let me know if you want to know how.
thanks for the come back.....i will service what i have.....it has worked this far....still runs....I was wondering if or where i guy might get a book that shows body fit and factory measurements on door gaps fenders. trunk hood ....not sure what this would be called ...did have one a 55 chevy once....need to replace so much sheet metal, dont know where things should be....exactly......any help much much appreciated... 51 merc four door....
On the body info it would probably be best to hunt down original factory body repair manuals. Since your car is pretty much stock this might be worth the 21 bucks asking price http://www.amazon.com/MERCURY-REPAIR-SERVICE-MANUAL-INCLUDES/dp/B00K22I6GG
