So far all I have found, and forgive for not knowing better, is a quick time bellhousing adaptor for the 390 fe to the T5. I want to be sure I have everything. Clutch disc, hydraulic throwout preferably, pressure plate, etc. Is there a kit that will simplify this? Am I being retarted for asking?? Thanks in advance, I sureappreciate it.

A backup T5 will be handy. Even the WC T5 has a tough time standing up to the torque of a well built 390. The WC T5 was rated at something like 320 ft-lbs if my memory serves. Most stock 390's made 370 to 430 ft-lbs. A well built one will make 500 ft-lbs or more.

Otherwise, it sounds like you have everything required: Bellhousing, Clutch disc, Pressure Plate, Throwout Bearing, Pilot Bearing, and Alignment tool.

    Good Luck

Try Forte's parts connection - Near Boston MA - Common swap for the Cobra guys - most use a Tremec for the reason stated above...

Are you asking if there are other options to put a T5 behind an FE?
Jason (jho on here) used an adapter between his (390) bellhousing and T5 in his coupe. I think the bellhousing was for a T10 or toploader 4-speed. Also, I think the T5 was a later Mustang unit with a longer input shaft.

I can find out where he got the adapter and a little more info, if that's what you're looking for.

  6. I did my 64 truck a number of years back , healthy 390 tripower I don't bang on it , but don't baby it either ,works fine no problems.
A truck bell housing is 3/4 of an inch deeper than a car bellhousing and the input shaft is an 1 1/4 longer than a toploader.
pull the input shaft out and put it in a lathe and grind 3/4 of an inch of the front and remove a 1/2 inch of the spline and every thing will bolt right in.

My 31 coupe has a 390 with truck bell and T5 with adapter from Riley Automotive (be careful when ordering from Riley). The adapter worked fine with some modification. I'vr already got a couple thousand miles on the car with a fair share of burn outs but no power shifting. T5 is holding up fine so far. Sure works great on the Interstate.
Sounds like "wood remover" has the best idea if you feel confident pulling down your T5 and have access to a lathe.

A good 390 will row right though a run of the mill T5 like a drunk Mexican will a group of cyclists along the road.

The old 300 hp 390 was rated at 427 foot pounds. I had a 375 hp in a 62 and it ate t10s every month or two. I would put it in with a zipper so it's easy to change.

  10. No need to tear down the tranny. Just undu the four bolts on the front retainer and pull out the input shaft . Because of the hardened steel shaft .it must be ground as a cutter will not touch the input shaft.
easy peasy 1/2 hours work. Bolts right up.

Wow. Thanks guys. Helps a lot. Is there another 5 speed out there besides the T5 that will work better?

  12. put a few tremecs behind big blocks with good results. just wondering do you just want an overdrive manual trans I have had an fe truck with a 3spd od that came factory. I know that the overdrive top loaders are not as stout as the non overdrive ones but they are stouter than your average t5 and its an easy bolt in procedure.

The Tremec TKO's and Richmond 5 speeds will bolt up to an FE with a Quicktime bellhousing, but they are not cheap, but they will definitely handle the torque. And who can argue with a brand new trans with warranty. You could also use a Ford M5R2 out of an F150 or a ZF5 out of an F250 or larger, but they both would require a bellhousing adapter from Bendsten's or similar. The price of the adapter makes the brand new TKO or Richmond alot more attractive.

I already had a Lakewood scatter shield behind my 428 in my Galaxie. I went with a Tremec TKO600 from Liberty Gears out of Michigan. They put a different FE specific input shaft in it, and I had them do their "Magic" to the gears to make it down shift smoother. I say if you can get ahold of a used scatter shield go that route. I think the QuickTime piece is $800 or more dollars.

As already posted, the Ford replacement TKO 500 or 600 is a much better 5 speed for your FE, and will bolt right up to stock '65 and later wide pattern bell housings without any adapters needed. :)

Wood Remover, What adapter did you use with the truck bellhousing if I may ask?

  18. No adapter, just ground the difference in length of shaft, in a lathe
with grinding wheel mounted to the tooling post

So you just redrilled the Tranny mount holes in the Bellhousing then right because they don't line up?

Thanks so much! 1 more question...did you use an 85-93 Mustang T5, or a later 94-99 Mustang T5, later models have an inch longer shaft again.

95 was the last year of the T5 if anyone needs a later transmission.

Behind the V8's yes. The T5 lived on until 2010 behind V6 Mustangs, albeit with the longer input shaft like the 94-5, but still had the same torque rating as the V8's. 300 ft. lbs. Therefore by changing the input shafts to the 83-93 shorter one, these can be used behind any engine with the same results. Google G Force T5 and check out how these old T5's can be fitted very easily to hold a guaranteed 500-600 HP/Torque rating...Opens some eyes to the old girl
